It was announced at 01:00 GMT Sunday 1st April that the specification
for HTML 5 has been released and will contain a series of new tags that
will allow the web site author to change browser settings and allow you
to filter the visitor depending on what content that they would wish to
see. The new tags are listed below. More information can be found at
<URL: http://www.pkuatb.net/>
<BROWSER> This tag will allow the web author to specify which browser
the site must be viewed with. The supported attribute will
"IE" "NN" "Opera" "Lynx" "Mosaic". If you have this browser
available then it will be run for you automatically and the
site content will appear there. Visitors who do not have a
required browser will instead receive the message "you must
get a better browser". This tag is optional but sites that
do not use it will be deregistered by Search Engines.
<CRASH> This tag will allow you to crash selected browsers that you
hate or do not wish your site to viewed with. Attributes as
<BROWSER> with the addition of "Other". Optional.
<GRAPHICS> This tag will override your visitors setting to ensure all
of your graphics are rendered on the visitors screen which
ensure pages appear as designed. No attribute. Any browser
not supporting this tag will therefore display an onscreen
message "Get a better browser".
<KEWL> Supported attributes with be "Yes" and "No". Combined with
a user definable setting in the Internet Options menu this
will allow visitors to decide whether or not to continue a
visit to a site. This tag will be REQUIRED and must be put
between the <HEAD></HEAD> containers. Default is "Yes".
<POPUPS> This tag will allow your new windows to remain on screen at
all times to display your adverts. The visitor cannot close
these new windows until they leave your site. This tag has
two attributes height="x" and width="y", with x and y being
the size of the window. The location is fixed so as to hide
the URL of the site.
<SCREEN> To ensure the visitor will be able to view the site as the
site as the author intended, this tag is a breakthrough in
that the visitor's screen will be refreshed to the correct
resolution if supported. If the required screen resolution
if not supported, visitors will get an onscreen message to
say "Your monitor and graphics card are out of date, get a
better one of each. Supported attributes will be "640x480"
"800x600" "1024x768" "1200x1024" and "1600x1200". Default
is to be set at "1600x1200". This is a REQUIRED tag and is
placed between the <HEAD></HEAD> container.
<PHONE> Created at the specific request of an authoring
newsgroup subscriber who wanted to link to a
telephone number. This tag will allow a number
to be stored within the browser memory and can
be accessed using the new 'redial' button once
you are offline to telephone the person you wish
to speak to. Atrribute is the full International
dialing number. You must have a phone connected
to the line or the recipient will only hear the
"Bells and Whistles" of a modem connection.
<MLM> This tag will send the associated Word file that
offers a Multi Level Marketing opportunity to the
visitor via email - they will be prompted for an
email address if this link is clicked. Once this
link is clicked, the user cannot back out of the
providing of an email address unless they give a
three-finger-salute to the Operating system. It
is expected this will be invaluable to those who
wish to harvest email addresses. The word file,
which has to be in the same directory, MUST be
called mlm.doc
<ANIMATE> This tag will allow you to override any visitor
settings to stop animated graphics. Best used in
conjunction with the <KEWL> tag. No attributes.
Must be placed within the <HEAD>/<HEAD> section
of the page.
<HARVEST> Of particular interest to email harvesters, this
tag will interrogate the visitors browser and, if
available, extract their email address and send
it to you via email. This tag is REQUIRED and all
pages not using it will default to insisting on
the provision of this information. Invalid or a
missing email address in the way the browser has
been configured will also generate this response.
Attribute is full email address of the intended
recipient of the harvested address.
<BETA> A special tag created for those who are testing
and using beta software. It will warn the visitor
that some of their software on their system is
rapidly becoming out-of-date and needs to have a
new download of later beta or full version files.
<COWPATS> Designed for use on sites that are talking a lot
of "sphincter extruded recycled bovine fodder" to
warn visitors that the information can be taken
with a proverbial pinch of salt. This will result
in a pop up window if set "On". The attributes
are "On" "Off" and the default is "On". This tag
is REQUIRED.
<LOADSPEED> This tag will allow you to specify the speed at
which information is sent from the server to the
visitors browser. If you find that your page is
loading too efficiently then you can specify a
slower download speed to give the illusion that
the page is far more complicated than it really
is. Attributes are "Fast" "Medium" "Slow".
<STAYHERE> Placed between <HEAD></HEAD> container this tag
will ensure that, at least temporarily, your
web site will be set to the default page that
is loaded when the browser is started.
<NOISY> Placed between <HEAD></HEAD> container this tag
will interrogate your system for appropriate
sound hardware and software. If such equipment
is found then there is the option to increase
the volume to 'full' automatically and switch
on the speakers to give the maximum effect to
the experience of the site. Attributes are "On"
and "Off" and the default is "On". This tag is
REQUIRED and it's absence assumes "On" and then
if suitable equipment is not found, your visitor
will receive an onscreen message to upgrade all
of their equipment.

><KEWL> Supported attributes with be "Yes" and "No".
Correction: At a last-minute WG of the W3C, it was decided that the
atrribute values would "kewl" and "or-not"
Maybe I should try claiming some copyright from the Web Standards
Project as my post 1st appeared this time last year in the freeserve
and demon groups ;-)
I like his homepage. Neat and clever.
Anyone got a direct URL for the Web Standards Project ? [sorry just
spotted this before dashing out for something I'm already late for
and, being a bit lazy, a URL to come back to would be nice ;-)]
continued x-post retained as I think it would be useful in each group.
