Hi
Anyone using Serif WepPlus? I have a problem uploading to my site
http://burdon.demon.co.uk I previously had no problems uploading pages
created in an earlier version of Serif or other applications but this
was in earlier times before Demon introduced the docroot folder.

WebPlus is an excellent programme but it only converts to html when you
upload so it is not compatible with other authoring programmes. I
recently designed a website for an organisation to which I belong and
had no problems uploading to a different server once I put the folder
name (in this case public_html) in the box.

I expected to do the same with my own site using the same programme and
putting docroot in the folder box. Did not work, I even tried leaving
out docroot but no. I get the message "An error occurred whilst trying
to get the working directory from the FTP server".

The ftp address, username and password are OK and I can get onto the
site using FileZila. If you log onto the site with IE you just get a
list of files, including index.htm and index.wpp that I loaded with
FileZila yesterday but it does not show the home page.

If anyone here uses WebPlus or has any suggestions I would be very
grateful for help.

So I see - clicking on your link produces a long pause then a No Can Do
message from IE.

Manually typing in www.burdon.demon.co.uk produces a long list of files.

I note that your index.htm file has a capital I, making it Index.htm.
Demon's servers are case-sensitive - try forcing the upload to make all
names lower-case. Several other files have mixed-case names; I suggest
that this is a Bad Idea (tm).

Also, if I click on the listed Index.htm I am told it's a ZIP file and
do I wish to unzip it. Odd :)

http://www.burdon.demon.co.uk/ - the other one is your home machine.

I'd suggest taking /docroot/ out of the folder to connect to. When I
connect to Demon with WS-FTP or another FTP program it automatically
goes to /docroot/ so I think that Serif is probably looking for a
docroot/ folder off the root of the public folders as you've put that as
the folder you want.

The important thing is: which folder does FTP connect to. In the case of
the other site, I'd suggest that you get "/" when connecting so you do
need to move to /public_html/ to upload publicly accessible files. Demon
have done it differently where the location you connect to *is* the
public folders.

That is because your index page is called Index.htm not index.htm - the
case is important. Rename Index.htm to index.htm and all will be well
with the home page loading. However, you will need to check the links in
all the other pages so that they refer to index.htm and not Index.htm

However, that is not your only problem. Index.htm seems to be a zipped
file and not an HTML file. I can't help with that as I don't have Serif
WebPlus available.

Just to warn you: there might not be many respondents as the group is
not much used these days. Those few of us who still keep an eye will no
doubt help as much as we can but Serif WebPlus might not be a common
program :)

Any questions then feel free to ask - we don't bite :)

Many thanks to Andy and Pedt for response and comments - some
interesting points raised which I will take on board - when I get the
bloody thing working!!

Some issues
1. Index.htm - I don't know how this happened but I have been trying so
many different things that I may have hit the shift key. I have now
renamed it to index.htm but no improvement. Incidentally, You have to
look hard in the Demon site to find that you have to call your homepage
index.htm.

2. Why is it zipped? Don't know but possibly because this file was
created by saving it from a Serif one (index.wpp) as index.htm. The
Serif file may involve compression and this was interpreted as a zip
file. Serif works in mysterious ways!!

3. docroot file. I can get into the site Control Panel and there is
emphasises that index.htm must go into the docroot folder. I have tried
both including and excluding docroot when publishing - it made no
difference. Anyway, I would hope it would be automatic at the Demon end
whether you specify or not.

4. If you log directly into a folder, e.g.
http://www.burdon.demon.co.uk/geology1.htm it reaches the file OK. Index
seems to be the only file it can't find.

5. It seems that Serif WebPlus and the Demon server both work OK - just
not with one another!

6. Finally - and this makes it more mysterious. I have written a trial
homepage with MS Word and saved it as index.htm. I uploaded using
FileZila (without specifying docroot) and it went in and now appears on
the site.

Conclusions
I still want to use Serif as it is a very good programme, very easy to
use and you can produce eye catching stuff. I know it can work because I
use it with another site I have just written and uploaded onto a
commercial hosting server. I could use MS Word but it does not look as
good and putting in the links is a total pain. I will keep working on it
and will ask both Demon and Serif for help but I suspect that each will
blame the other! If any other ideas occur to you please let me know.

Thanks again for your comments.
