Ihad a very frustrating problem with my printer - I think actually a firmware bug from Epson. It would go back and forth between saying Replace Ink Cartridges and another error about invalid ink cartridge detected. There is a lock where you cannot open the top unless it gets out of this state but it was stuck in that state.
Best answer is by Karen Jaggi below-- make sure to lift not just the lid to the scanner, but the ENTIRE TOP of the printer that exposes the innards. (There are two levels of being able to lift the top.) THEN you can open the lid to the ink cartridges easily and get the business taken care of. Great printer, but a quirky thing to have happen when you're trying to do a simple refill. Refill is easy after you figure this little problem out. This worked for printer ET-3760.
My ink cartridge carrier would go all the way to the right. In fact, too far so that the arrows would not line up. The next time I got the carrier to go the left and return right to the arrows, I just placed the handles of my scissors all the way to the right. Placed them in the way against the right side. The carrier then stopped perfectly at the arrow and aligned. I could then change my ink cartridges!!! WHEW!!
And here is the answer that even Epson support didn't know (they claimed it was a HW issue which it was not). There is a small rectangular slot on the front right of the cover. Gently push a screwdriver or the point of a scissor down into that and it releases the top!
where exactly is the slot? Don't see anything to the right of the ink hatch cover. I can lift the right side of the cover but the left side is locked down tight. Don't want to break it, though people have said they've forced it open
Thank you so much!!! I have killed an entire evening on this. Every demonstration starts with the lid open. This has been one of the most maddening devices I have ever owned. As soon as the pandemic is over, I am going to Costco to get another HP!!!
You have to tell the printer that you want to replace the cartridge using the menu on the touch screen. From the home screen, select Settings, Maintenance, Ink Cartridge(s) Replacement. Follow the directions on the screen. The printer will move the carriage to the position where you will be able to lift up the lid and replace the cartridge. Close it back up again, then let the printer go through its routine, and you'll be good to go.
Thank you Renee! For a year we have been lifting up the lid and replacing the cartridges without a problem until a few days ago. Trying to replace the ink and it would not line up the arrows to get the little ink tray cover open to be able to do so. We opened up the settings on the screen and went to maintenance and then Ink Cartridges (Replacement) then you could open up the lid and the ink cartridge box would move and arrows would line up. Finally able to replace the ink cartridge.
Thank you Renee. I have a 7820 and like the person above, I have changed my ink without a problem for the last year. Then, 2 weeks ago, the cover was stuck under the printer frame. A bunch of posts said to find a rectangular slot on the front side of the cover. But, I have no such slots. Apparently, on 5/29/2021 a guy, Alan K gave this same instruction far down in the comments. I couldn't find a way to thank him. So, I'm thanking YOU cuz you also posted this simple remedy right in the Settings option. So, that is fixed. My new ink cartridges are properly installed. But, now all colors print but not the black. Is there a remedy for that.
how to you get the ink cartridge to move to left so I can access the right color to change? I have message 288 xl . I removed shook it then removed the tape and installed it completely. I wanted to pull the yellow cart out again and reinstall to see if that works. This printed did this with each color I did. So annoying. help! computer and printer are connected
lota
Hello Lota! Go to the maintenance option on your printer and select Ink Cartridge Replacement. You should notice that the ink cartridge will move so you can replace the inks accordingly. The printer should give a cue as to when you can remove and replace cartridges. I hope this helps!
Hello Keith! Conducting an extended cleaning cycle should help the printer to recognize the ink cartridge. The ink must have started to dry up. After the cleaning cycle, try to do a print test and see if the result is back to normal. I hope this helps!
Hello Lisa! One possible reason is that the cartridge you got may be faulty. Or, you can check the protective tape if it was removed from the cartridge. Making sure that your printer head is in a clean position should help in making the cartridges work.

Im still having a hard time with my wf4830 pro US version. Its impossible. I got a chip resetter physical and it did not work. Is there anyone who has successfully converted a wf4830 pro US to a sublimation printer? I have been looking for months now, please contact me if you have or know someone who has thank you in advance!
Which multi function wireless photo printer , do you recommend as giving good quality results, and easy to make use 3rd party cartridges. Not bothered about speed .
Want good quality photo prints up to A4, able to print wirelessly from phones etc.
Most important no functionality can be disabled that can not be simply overridden.
Hi Rob,
Thank you for clear explanation of resetting cartridge chips. I wonder whether you could send me a link that describes contacts on the Epson SX235N chip, their numbers, functions, type of chip, and possibly the schematic diagram of connections.
Andrew
Flip that cartridge over and look at the contacts, Vai. If you place a piece of tape over the top contact of the second row from the right, and a piece of tape over the bottom contact of the third row from the right, you may be able to fool your HP 404dn into believing the ink cartridge is full. You can remove the tape on the cartridge once your HP 404dn starts printing a test page. This video goes into more detail. Good luck!
Try these steps from HP support, Ashley.
1. Remove the cartridges from your printer.
2. With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the back of your printer and wait 30 seconds.
3. Plug back in and power up the printer.
4. Reinstall the ink cartridges when the printer requests them.
You can learn more about HP error messages here.
Good luck, Ashley! Avoid future problems by sticking with OEM ink cartridges!
The Sawgrass SG500 is a fine sublimation printer, Duane, but resetting the chips can be a challenge. This video shows a user having success by replacing the chip on his SG500 cartridges. Check it out!
Hi Rob, Firstly thank you so very much for such an informative write up, its very well written, will plenty of detail. I own the epson 440 and my search for resetting the cartridges led me here to your website. You mentioned their are 3rd party chip resetting firmware/programs available, some of them being free, do you have any suggestions on where im able to download one. Most ive come across are free, but will lock you out of the printer without buying an activation code.
Your experience is not uncommon, Vito. Third-party cartridges are notorious for giving incorrect ink levels. The best advice we can give is to stick with genuine HP ink cartridges. They cost more, but they work right every time!
According to Primera, you should go to the control panel on your LX500 and select Printers and Faxes.
Select your printer and click on Printing Preferences. You can choose Clean/Change Cartridges, Check Ink Levels, or Ink Levels and Cartridge Maintenance under preferences. Any of these choices should reset your Primera LX500 cartridges.
Click the Change button.
Choose which cartridges you are changing, black or color.
Best of luck, Muz!
Hi, I have tried everything possible with my Hp 63 original in cartridge. to override. It is still showing ink level depleted even after I have reinked the cartridge and over the chip thing the test print comes out perfect showing the colors and it said it has aligned however when I print my document it comes out black and white only and showing me estimated ink level for the color is empty.
The color cartridge is full. Can you show a picture of where to cover on the HP 63 chip after refilling the ink please.
Have you tried this, Kevin?
1. Turn off your T210
2. Unplug it from the wall
3. Remove all ink cartridges
4. Plug in and restart the printer
5. Replace the ink cartridges when prompted
Sometimes this works. There is a good guide to troubleshooting DesignJet T210 problems here.
How can I reset a Brother LC404 ink cartridge for a Brother J1205W printer? I doesnt seem to have a reset button on the cartridge, and I cannot find a cartridge resetter available online. I am very frustrated with this as I bought the printer because it was advertised with the Inkvestement Tanks which I thought were refillable. Great information in your site here. Thanks
I have Kyocera 3155DN printers that I just bought from UK. They use different power in the US but I have a transformer that takes care of that issue. However the toner the UK printer uses is TK-3190 and the toner the US version uses is TK-3182. Will a reset chip allow me to use the TK-3182 in the UK printer?
Hello, is it possible to reset chips for Canon imageprograf Pro 6100S.
There is 8 cartridges. I just replaced one chip with Canon IPF-1700 chip although it is not the same chip. It works!
Other 7 color chips I would like to reset somehow.
There is no reseter on the market. There is no buttons to press on the cartridges.
