Dear Friends:

After several weeks when I was very tied up with family affairs and
out of town, and I know that many others were as well, I hope we can
start a new year of discussion and action. If you can break away,
please come over to the University Center under our usual trees (bring
a warm jacket!) and let's see where we are for 2010.

That's Saturday, January 2nd, at 9 am.

I've been asking myself lately if the "magic" is completely gone. I
hope not, because we're going to need some of it during the next year.
I know we still have many important issues to consider for our
country, and the economic situation is far from good. However, the
biggest issues this year, politically, are probably right here in
California. We don't really even have, in my opinion, a viable
candidate for Governor, but we will need to elect one in November.
We're going to have a ballot stuffed with important issues that may
determine if the state can become governable again. Barbara Boxer is
up for re-election, and there are important constitutional officers on
the ine, like the courageous John Chiang and Debra Bowen, our
Controller and Secretary of State.

Surely we are not going to retreat into apathy and inaction after our
exciting time electing President Obama. Let's get together and see how
we can keep the energy going and bring California home.
