A page with the description of the four basic Healthcare models,
prepared for the Frontline documentary, "Sick Around the World."

Kudos for such a fine informative piece!! Very nice. As the saying
goes, "Knowledge is Power". Thanks for the knowledge about the
various models. I had no idea. Unless and until Americans DEMAND
(like the French are so good at doing) that Health Care is a
fundamental right, as with food, clothing and shelter, we will
continue to define and redefine all the various permutations of groups
afforded this or that right. It is curious to me that the right to
these basic elements food-clothing-shelter and health care -- are
guaranteed all inmates who are incarcerated. I am not suggesting that
we lower the standards for those incarcerated, but to raise them for
those who are not.

Thank you for such an insightful article. As always, the devil is in
the details. Without exposing ourselves to such debate, few, if any
of us would be able to make an informed decision. But thanks to you
and the group, we now have an avenue for knowledge. Keep up the good
work. We must not assume that since we now how more power in
Washington that we can simply go on "autopilot". Rather, we must be
constantly vigilant. The author seems to gravitate towards the
Scandinavian model. I concur. It makes no sense to force people to
pay for something they cannot afford. The net effect is the same as
if you didn't have the benefit to begin with.

Wow! Excellent article! Good work!

I have volunteered to help take care of an elderly man. My "shift" is
basically now...on the weekends, when I am more-or-less free. I get to use
the internet but it means until I get relieved I will miss the Saturday
meetings for awhile.

I wanted to know if it would be okay with you and the group to post an
advertisement for the independent, online, progressive news service
"Buzzflash" on the groups website. I have worked with these fine folks for
years now and they do not get funding from any commercial sponsors. Truly
independent. Perhaps you know of them.

Anyway, here is their URL

Follow-up to the discussion on the fairness doctrine. From "The Hill".

Senate tunes out Fairness Doctrine, 87-11
By Alexander Bolton
Posted: 02/26/09 02:55 PM [ET]

The Senate voted Thursday in favor of an amendment to the District of
Columbia voting-rights bill that would prohibit the Federal Communications
Commission (FCC) from reinstating the so-called Fairness Doctrine, which
critics say would decimate conservative talk radio.

The Senate passed the measure 87-11.

Republicans have introduced the Broadcaster Freedom Act in the House as
well, but Democrats are not expected to allow a vote on the bill.

Legislation would have to pass both chambers of Congress and receive
President Obama's signature.

The FCC first implemented the doctrine in the late 1940s to balance the
political content of broadcasters, requiring them to give equal time to
liberal and conservative viewpoints.

The agency scrapped the regulation in the mid-'80s after determining that it
was no longer necessary because the public had a wide array of political
news sources from which to choose.

Since then Congress has tried twice to re-implement the Fairness Doctrine
but failed because of vetoes by former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George
H.W. Bush.

The amendment, sponsored by Senate Republican Steering Committee Chairman
Jim DeMint (S.C.) and Senate Republican Conference Vice Chairman John Thune
(S.D.), would block the FCC from reviving equal-time requirements by
enacting the Broadcaster Freedom Act.

Specifically, it would prohibit the agency from forcing broadcasters to
present opposing viewpoints on "controversial issues of public importance."

Conservatives fear that forcing stations to make equal time for liberal talk
radio would slash profits and pressure radio executives to scale back on
conservative programming to avoid escalating costs and interference from
government regulators.

Opponents of the Fairness Doctrine argue that liberal talk radio has not
proven popular or profitable. For example, "Air America," liberals' answer
to "The Rush Limbaugh Show," filed for bankruptcy in October 2006.

The FCC discarded the policy in 1985 after deciding that it restricted
journalistic freedom and "actually inhibit[ed] the presentation of
controversial issues of public importance to the detriment of the public and
in degradation of the editorial prerogative of broadcast journalists,"
according to a Congressional Research Service report.

Change.org has an excellent article today on the Japanese health care
system.

You wanted facts -- you got facts! A wonderful person named Jani
Beers compiled this extensive list of articles and I went through and
put all the links in. A very few are just to articles which you'd have
to get at a library. This ought to provide enough research material to
put together anything you want. One of the links (the California link)
will take you to the One Care site, although it's for "last year's"
bill. However, you can explore that site to get more up to date
information.

Good luck and good reading!

Hello, everyone! I'm back from the beautiful and relaxing Grand Canyon
and found this good news on the Single Payer Healthcare front.

Here's an article from Truthout that says we should keep on pushing,
that we are making progress. It's going to take big numbers of people
pushing to make enough noise that the media will cover it.

Here's another article from Truthout by Robert Reich. He has warned
in several articles about "faux" public options. This is an
interesting article and 'call to arms" on behalf of Obama's public
option vision.

Don't forget also to check every day with Ezra Klein's blog
(www.ezraklein.com) for the latest health care discussions.

If you haven't visited our discussion group lately, please do so. We
are still going strong, and more people keep wanting to tell their
health care stories. There are a lot of other vital topics as well.
The California budget is front and center. Can we make a difference?
Please come and share your ideas.

By the way, if you are not an "official" club member, you may not know
about our June 21st (yes, it's Fathers' Day) meeting with a program by
OC for Darfur. Sometimes we need to focus on the problems of the wider
world, so much more tragic than our own problems. Check out the
details at http://www.70thaddac.org/

The health care articles keep rolling in. I tried to send some other
links and am not sure if they worked. In particular, I urge you to
check out the NY Times for last Friday, when Paul Krugman wrote an
excellent Op-Ad.

As usual, Ezra Klein has helpful comments and articles on his daily
Blog. He has some comments about the Trigger that Olympia Snowe wants
that are interesting to read.

Supposedly she may lead a Filibuster if the Trigger isn't included,
but no one else wants it. The secret is getting all the Democrats to
vote as a bloc, and to get the Obama Administration to relinquish the
idea of a "bipartisan" bill made up of one Republican along with the
Democrats.
