Dear DeLUG Members,
Below are a few reminders regarding our upcoming events!
First Meeting: Our first meeting is Monday, September 10th at 10am in Boyd GSRC Room 208! Our speaker will be Raunak Dey. Raunak is a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science here at UGA, working under the guidance of Dr. Yi Hong. His area of interest is primarily Artificial Intelligence and Heuristics, and his current work is in the application of AI to the field of biomedical imaging. Raunak has had a paper - CompNet: Complementary Segmentation Network for Brain MRI Extraction (https://arxiv.org/pdf/1804.00521.pdf) - accepted to the prestigious MICCAI 2018 conference in Spain. He will be giving a presentation on the deep learning methods he used for this research and the specific issues he has addressed therein. More details will be sent out next week.
Social Event: We have an informal Social Event scheduled for next Friday, September 7th at 8pm. The event will be held at Walker’s Pub, which is located downtown on College Street between Broad St. and Clayton St. (near the Arch on North Campus). We hope this will provide the opportunity for like-minded individuals to meet and get to know one another. Come on out and start the weekend with us!
Field Trip: Finally, we are in the process of applying for funding to provide free transportation to the Data Science ATL 2018 conference in Atlanta on October 19! As we do not collect any membership dues, eligibility for a seat onboard with us will depend on regular attendance of the meetings, monitored by a sign-in sheet passed around during the meetings. In preparing to go before the UGA Student Government Association to apply for the funding, we need to have an idea for how many people we will be transporting. As such, please let us know if you are interested in this opportunity by replying to this e-mail. NOTE: You must pay for your own ticket - $250 per person - to attend the conference; we are only providing transportation to and from the event. More details about this exciting learning and networking opportunity can be found here: http://dsatlconf.com.
We look forward to seeing you at our first meeting on Sept. 10 and our social event on Sept. 7! As always, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Best wishes,
The Deep Learning @ UGA Student Committee
