Hey Folks:

The National Weather Service has issued a Freezing Rain Warning that encompasses all 4 counties of Territory 1 – Catawba, Alexander, Burke and Caldwell.  This warning time frame is 9pm this evening until 9am tomorrow morning. The main issue we experience with freezing rain is downed power lines.  During times when it is extremely cold and there is significant power outages, we may likely have to open shelters.

As the day progresses, there may be additional warnings for other parts of our region. There are also warnings issued for parts of the Western Carolinas and Heart of Carolinas regions.  I need for all our chapters to take the following preparedness steps today:

-make sure disaster response vehicles are fueled

-make sure shelter trailers and supplies are ready to roll, and that you have a way to transport them

-check availability of sheltering, feeding, health and mental health volunteers

-check with volunteers/staff who have NSS accounts and ensure their accounts are active

-check in with your respective county emergency managers

As always, we’ll keep our fingers crossed in hopes that we will not have to mount a response this evening or tomorrow.  However, we do need to be ready to roll if called upon.  Thank you for your efforts in preparing for a possible winter storm response.
