Hi, have you already installed Widevine (see here: Wildvine missing on New Brave )?
If not, Netflix may not immediately recognize that it is installed, and will only display a black screen over time.
@bergerbse,
Sounds like this could be a hardware acceleration issue. Can you try disabling it and see if that helps?

I can stream Netflix just fine when I play it using my Chrome browser. But, when I try to play Netflix using Safari (version 10.0), I get one or two frames of video, and then a black screen. I still have all of the controls and slider and I still get sound, but the video is just a black screen.
I just now tried it again using Safari, and got code S7363-1260-48444350 when trying to play a video. The code referred to an incompatible monitor. I tried again, and got the same issue as before, where I get a few frames of the video, and then the video goes black, but I can hear the audio and I still have control of the playback (e.g., play/pause, volume, etc.).
When I unplugged my external monitors and used only the laptop screen, the video played. So, I now know that the problem has something to do with my external monitors being connected to my laptop, even if I'm trying to play the video on my laptop screen.
Simple solution (os High Sierra) but Netflix have so far ignored my message! Forget all their solutions particularly concerning Silver Light, as that is no longer needed. This only began for me with Safari 11.0.1. I was able to connect using FireFox without issue so it had to be Safari settings.
Thanks, but I've already done an Internet search to find a solution to my problem. I've re-installed the latest version of Silverlight, and that hasn't helped. Also, Chrome works just fine with Netflix, which I think also uses Silverlight. I've also tried restarting the computer and the other typical non-specific solutions.
- I do get the display error thing (thunderbolt > VGA displays attached). Checked with develop tab if netflix works in safari 10 (don't see another version of safari in the list). However, if I select 'firefox: mac' and allow the silverlight plugin (that I just installed) then it works.
If the issue is the HTML5 player (since in older safari versions with silverlight, it does work), how do I force Netflix to use silverlight? It seems it always reverts back to HTML5, even if silverlight's installed.
I have made sure all the display settings on the Apple TV unit are the same whether connected directly to the TV or through the Arcana. The only things different is through the Arcana the audio is set to Dolby Atmos.
I notice a short black screen / re-sync when starting a content that i didn't have or noticed when connected direct to TV?
All that is normal, you will have the same if you insert any device in between, like an AVR, splitter, matrix, switcher, video processor, and the more device you have in the same chain, the longer this will take, the only way to have that nearly not noticeable is SOURCE > DISPLAY direct since signal goes straight to panel driver. If menu is 60Hz and content 24Hz then there will be a re-sync like for any video format change, if you have SOURCE > TV, then sure you never noticed it but insert any device in between and you will have the exact same, just normal, HDMI re-sync.
If the previews are set to autoplay while scrolling through shows on Netflix, the screen will go blank with each selection because the Arcana is having to re-sync every time a new preview starts. To get around this, you need to disable the autoplay previews option under Playback Settings under your Netflix profile. This can be changed in your account settings on the Netflix website.
Had the same issue for the first time the other day, and found that by unplugging the puck for a couple of minutes and then restarting, all was fine. Hasn't happened since, and hoping it won't happen again!
Ditto here - mid-November '23. Rec'd my Sky Glass and all is good barring Netflix with the dreaded black screen and deadly silence. I've not got a Sky puck as it's all in the box, now. Netflix has worked but now I have to go in via a Kindle Firestick.
Sadly this doesn't seem to have any effect. I tried it last night and apps appeared to have been refreshed as the screen returned to 'refresh' from 'being refreshed'. Trying it again in the cold light of day....nada!
What would be useful is if there was an easy option to see what apps were open on the Glass/Stream and be able to actively force them to close. Which would actually be an easier fix than having to pull the plug out or kick off an app refresh.
The other option for Sky is to upgrade the hardware. Slightly more beefier specs on the puck and Glass, whilst they won't properly solve the issue may at least mean people won't have to reboot as often as they are.
I recently ran into a problem where Netflix on Chrome would not work. Audio played correctly but the video did not play. The screen is black (in Chrome stable) or white (chrome beta). The thumbnail images, usually visible through the hover over menu bar, were positioned on the vertically left side of the screen.
Hey folks,
like many others I also experienced the issue of broken video streams and black screen phenomena when trying to cast (especially Chromecast) Amazon Prime, Netflix etc. on all the different Edge branches.
Well, after a lot of experimenting with different Edge flags, graphic driver setups, installing video codecs and so on, I finally found the solution. Researching how these streaming vendors manage DRM did the trick and the fix is so simple that I almost couldn't believe, lol
Background: The big streaming vendors all use DRM (Digital Rights Management) to control how their content is shown, especially in context with user rights (e.g. the limitation to only watch the same video on Amazon Prime simultaneously on not more than 2 different devices).
Now most of the streaming platforms are optimized to use Google's Widevine DRM technology, whereas Edge also supports Microsoft's PlayReady DRM by default (on Windows 10/11). But since it's not well implemented on many streaming platforms they struggle and give you all the above issues.
I have just received the AF8 which is an amazing television, but so far has been a frustrating experience as just as I settle down to watch something off YouTube or Netflix, it will start file and then after a short while the sound keeps playing, but this screen goes black.
Appreciate the reply, but the symptoms I am experiencing are not due to insufficient speed as I can stream perfectly on all other devices. When the resolution attempts to ramp up from 720 > 1080 or 1080 > 1440 etc, the tv goes black but the sound keeps playing. YouTube and Netflix both have the same issue which happens intermittently, although more often than not.
I understand that the issue may not be related to the connection speed, but it could be related to compatibility or other factors. A quick way to test this is to connect the TV to a different network (I recommend a hot spot created by your smartphone, preferably using 4G) to see if the same or other issues will occur.
For the same reason, I'd also try connecting via LAN just as a test too. Seems that you've gone through a long list of troubleshooting steps so far so I wouldn't see a reason to hold back on these two attempts.
@dutchiceconfirmed the issue in that thread on an A1 (my set is a KD-55XE9305). I escalated to Netflix, but because the issue only manifested itself with the March firmware (v6.2858) update to my set, they essentially told me it would be down to Sony to fix their firmware regression.
For programs that encounter this bug (and it's not every film/tv show etc), I just have to watch on another device unfortunately - it's a pain, and without further effort on the part of Sony, I fear it may not get fixed. I don't know if a fix for this is in the firmware version currently being developed to deal with the dimming issues reported, or if it's being fixed in an newer Android TV release for this model..
On the plus side, knowing now that this issue manifests with YouTube as well (which I tend to not use - hence not encountering the bug) may confirm to those who can address this that it's a firmware bug, likely related to adaptively changing video decoding or surface display parameters in some form.
When issue appears try press and hold Home button on R/C, then close every other app except Netflix or Youtube and restart your video. Another app e.g. GUIDE may keep Display-Screen Aspect ratio or Resolution for Video, different than your Video.
Last thing, try a reset for your picture settings during playback: Action Menu - Picture - Advanced settings -Reset or experiment on various settings of Brightness Colour Clarity and Motion
This is both bad and good news to be honest. I am amazed that not more people have experienced this, but thankfully it's not just me. Sony need to address this quickly as it's not every day you buy a 2400 television, only to find that it's the ONLY device you have ever owned that fails to stream a simple Netflix of YouTube video!
