NONGPOKTHONG
VISAGES FROM THE EAST
(MANIPURI FILM FESTIVAL, NEW DELHI)
9-13, MARCH 2011
For the first time, Delhi will witness a Festival of Manipuri Cinema,
Nongpokthong: Visages from the East, from 9-13 March, 2011.
Nongpokthong (Eastern Gate), the five days long festival, will
showcase more than 40 films, both feature and non-feature, from
Manipur. From Matamgi Manipur(the First Manipuri Feature Film) to the
internationally acclaimed Imaagi Ningthem, the Festival will feature
award winning films as well as old classics. It will also showcase
films that belong to the ‘digital revolution’ for which Manipuri
cinema has come to be the vanguard in the history of cinema in India.
There will also be a selection of the best documentary films from
Manipur.
Many of the Manipuri movies and documentaries have been screened and
acclaimed internationally and won critic awards nationally but rarely
screened for people in India. A bouquet of these celebrated
productions from Manipur will be presented for the cinema lovers of
Delhi for the first time.
The proposed Festival will not only be an occasion to showcase the
Manipuri cinema to a larger audience but also to acquaint the people
here in Delhi, which shall include Indians as well as foreigners and
the youths in general, about Manipur, her people, their culture, and
issues that confront them. With the aim of breaking the stereotypes,
ignorance or inadequacy of awareness and understanding about the state
amongst the people from outside the state and the North East region
and vice versa, the film screenings, panel discussions and lectures is
open to all. There will be subtitles and interpreters to enable better
understanding.
The festival, which shall be attended by well known film personalities
and popular cine artists from Manipur and elsewhere, will also host
lectures and panel deliberations on cinema and their socio-cultural
and political moorings. Besides, the visitors will get an opportunity
to taste the traditional delicacies and also buy books and copies of
music and films (CDs & DVDs) as well as handloom and handicraft items
from Manipur.
With the cultural programmes (dance and music) in evening, the five
days bonanza will also have glimpses of the rich cultural traditions
of the state. Thus, NONGPOKTHONG: VISAGES FROM THE EAST shall be a
festival that brings the ‘look east’ experience in Delhi as the
festival opens the Eastern Gate.
Major sites of the Festival will be at Jawaharlal Nehru University,
Jamia Milia Islamia, and colleges of Delhi University. The Festival
opens at Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi, on 9th March 2011.
The festival is organized by Manipur Film Development Corporation
(MFDC) under the Department of Arts and Culture, Government of
Manipur, in partnership with various educational and cultural
institutions/groups in Delhi.
