I recently bought a bicycle and I have been cycling near the Delhi -
Noida roads since I live in East Delhi and travel to my colege in
Noida everyday. I was wondering if it's safe to park my cycle at teh
Metro stations as I am paranoid about someone stealing it... Also,
what do you generally do when you park your cycle on the roads, etc
(tie it around a lamp post?) and what if you cant find something ..
Also, are there cycle parking lots at Rajiv Chowk / Cenral Secretariat
and other important metro stations?

Parking at metro station is quite safe ...till you don't own a very
high end bicycle .
And regarding the issue of stealing ,i can guarantee you that parking
at metro station is more safer than parking at other sites.

Also i would suggest not to park on roads as it may lead to stealing.
Whenever i go out on my cycle i plan out in such a manner that some
metro parking is nearby from where i can walk or take some
transportation .

There is definitely a parking at Pragati Maidan and Patel Chowk for
cycles and yes I do use a chain to tie the cycle to a pole / barrier
etc making sure it would not be an impediment to regular traffic flow
or hinderance in movement for other people / things / vehicles :) . I
have a sticker on the cycle mentioning my contact number etc just in
case someone needs to contact owner of the cycle to move it around
.... Am paranoid as well!

welll....congrats for the new bicycle u bought...its good to see
people going for cycles, and helping reducing pollution to great
extent....anyways, the parking lots offer enough space to park cycle
there and where you pay some parking charge to the attendent there,
it's allways safe. So, don't worry at all, park your cycle there and
relax...!!

Every one with a concern of CYCLE theft. please contact a local insurance agent who handels the sarkari insurance, go for a Home insurance. and the cycle would be covered and it costs not much just around like 500 for a average house hold.

Thanks

Buddy! Even in western countries you rae prone to cycle thefts as much you are hear!
If you have a bike with quick release bolts, make sure you pass your lock through the post and then through the rear rim and bike frame. Use another lock to pass through front rim and the bike frame.
Ensue one of your lock pass through a fixed object - Railing, Pole, Bike stand rods n so on , othewise dont risk it !

well........carrrying a chain also scratches the frame..
I carrry my rubber padded long lock. so u do get power poles and all
at particular spots. Also metro stations will hv an attendent. sso
rest assured yr bike may not be in that good hands...but still its in
secured hands

Parking at metro stations is as safe as parking ur bike there. So dont worry about it.
I have been parking my cycle at the metro station parking lots for years now, they give u a slip the same way for a car/bike.

And yes, for Metro Smart-card owners ... its free parking fr cycles.. save ur 2 bucks :)

Cheers

Hi all,

Parking is not safe anywhere!!!

My friend parked his wagon r at rohini west station, it got stolen!!! He went to police station but cop said there is no use in registering case against parking owner, there are already many cases against him. He then asked my friend to throw away the parking ticket and get claim from insurance company.

Stealing cycle is the easiest. It doesn't matter if it's normal parking or dmrc parking.

Use good lock and chain and pray to god that nothing bad happen.

If you are using your cycle for a relatively short distance I would strongly advise using a locally produced Atlas, Hero, Hercules, etc.  Although they are comparatively heavy, they are relatively well suited to Delhi's roads and, because of their low resale value, do not stand out from the crowd.  They are also unbelievably cheap to run and give employment to those who need it.  If one does get stolen then its not the end of the world if you lose it.

I would likewise attach the bicycle to a solid object but you shouldn't have to worry too much about using large chains.  I parked my Atlas in the car park next to the Press Club at Central Sec for two years, some days leaving it for three or four days.  I made friends with a local chai wallah, always buying a cup from him and got a waiter in the area cleaning it for me for a small charge.  That way 'the eyes and the ears' of Delhi's street kept a look out for me.

Nowadays I'm back living in London and am permanently nervous about leaving my cycle.  Bicycles here are expensive and thieves are highly skilled in the art.  I've seen people spraying their cycles so they can't be re-sold and purposely buying rusty wrecks.  In India you have a much better alternative already.  I would use that.

Guys,

I have been one of the strong advocates of chaining the bike...and of course buying a one which doesnt cost much as I am more inclined towards ruf and tuf rather than being classy..

I have little to add to your disappointment here. Few days back I saw a Delhi Police notice pasted on boards in South Extn...where they have asked the junta to be aware of suspicious looking objects...and unfortunately in the center of the poster is a red colored bicycle. So I advocate some sort of monitoring done by street vendors as Simon has suggested.

At most of the metros, please chain it with any relevant object next to Bike parking. That ways the parking incharge is aware that your bicycle is there. It is free for smart card users.

Nitanshu

Hi all...
It's been wonderfule..the responses for my query... it's a hercules
cycle i use.. Though it's not a high end cycle, i would still not want
to lose a brand new cycle which i bought for 4k..besides, i really
like cycling around the city now and i almost use it to commute to
anywhere...noida..to cp, khan market, etc and i dont want someone to
steal that away from me.. All these days i've been parking my cycle at
places where i can see it from where i am... I just bought a chain and
a lock besides the small rubber tube lock ... So now i can chain it to
lamposts etc and not be worried, i hope...
Thanks
Archana
