Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has tried to carry a folding bicycle on the Delhi Metro.
Considering that the network is quite in place at least on my side of town (East Delhi) I wanted to carry a folding bicycle so that its easier to get around.

Thanks,

Dileep

Hercules....the showroom in gurgaon has good options.

i guess the only disadvantage is that appears to be a little fragile and delicate....also i aint too sure as to how much effort will be required when wheel base is smaller than required.

hi all

the only indian folding cycles i know of are made by ti cycles (bsa or hercules) and they are made of steel, cost about 6-8 k. i have never used one. but i can imagine that they would need extra effort to ride because of their small wheel size. therefore i think they are useful for short city commuting - typically lets say from a metro station/bus stand to your house/office/shop. typically good for rides of less than 5 km at a stretch. also if you need to carry stuff on the cycle they would not be too useful. in addition if you were to carry a folding cycle on the metro/bus plus you have other bags (your office gear/laptop/lunch box/shopping, etc) then it may be difficult to manage everything together.

these are my thoughts... since i have not tried it myself

i would really be interested in interacting with someone who has done it

best wishes

I haven't ridden one myself but a friend of mine who I ride with here
(in NYC) has one and is very happy with it. We have done fairly long
rides together - in the 20-30 mile range - and he is a lot older than
me to! He has a Dahon, which is one of the better folding bike
manufacturers. The bikes are sturdy, very quick and easy to fold and
equally easy to open out, and fairly light to, so carrying them around
isn't much of a problem. And they all come with gears so you can
manage a decent clip to! Folding bikes by Schwinn start at less than
200 USD here and the Dahon range starts from about 300 USD, I think. I
guess the difference in price range between BSA/Hercules and
Dahon/Schwinn is possibly the material of the frame, which in turn
makes the latter much lighter.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Dilip.

A friend in Banglaore had Strida - http://www.strida.com/ -- cool cycle with very light weight to carry. She could easily go till 7 kms but not more than that. I tried it and it felt same as any light weight high-end cycles. But it's best till 6-7 kms. Folding cycles are only useful when you combine them with bus/metro or other public transportation.

A lot of friends in bangalroe used to get folding bikes from US I recall. It's allowed free in some airlines it seems. Here's one more famous brand of folding bikes - http://www.dahon.com/ - no idea if it's available in India.

There are many Indian brands too, but I don't have much idea.

All these folding bikes look weird and inefficient. The real thing would be a regular frame MTB bike that one could fold. Anyone got link to anything like that? A bike that can go 100 km off-road.

Why what happens after 7 Kms!

Firefox has a folding bike available for 7K. Here is the link

I think we digressed from Dileep's original question - whether anybody
has carried foldable bicycles in the metro.
I'm not aware of anybody, but I'd except some trouble here - too much
of metal might make them freak out. It's just an assumption that there
will need to be some education for the cyclist in convincing stations
about carrying folable bicycles.

I'm in Mumbai these days, friends, and there's a friend who cycles
daily on the Dahon foldable bicycle. It is about 8-10km of one-way
cycling for him. I had apprehensions when I'd started riding with him,
but knowing that he's done 80km rides on these makes me sure that the
limitation's purely mental. The first time we'd met, we rode about
60km, with him not trailing too much. If promoted, these can come off
as a worthy solution for those who find regular bicycles inconvenient
and unsafe to leave around.
