Followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, moderated by Aanchal Kapur.
About the Film: Kamlabai Gokhale was one of the first actors of India, and the first lady of Indian cinema. The film follows conversations with Kamlabai as she talks about her present, past and her future through photographs, enactments from a play,
and music from the beginning of this century. Kamlabai offers a unique and rarely explored perspective of the history of Indian cinema and theatre as experienced by a woman who struggled against the social structures of her times.
About the Filmmaker: Reena Mohan is an award winning documentary filmmaker and editor who has worked out of Dubai, India, Kathmandu and London. She has edited several features, television serials and over 50 documentaries, many of which have been screened
at international film festivals and received critical acclaim. She produced and directed her landmark debut documentary Kamlabai in 1992 and has, till now, scripted and directed 10 non-fiction films that reveal a passionate engagement with people’s lives and
issues of filmmaking. Reena has been conducting workshops on documentary practice for over two decades and has been associated with various international film festivals as a curator or a jury member. She is the recipient of three National Film Awards from
the President of India for excellence in cinema and was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award at the prestigious International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala in 2022.
About the Kriti Film Club: The longest running documentary screening initiative in India, turning 25 this June 2024. The Kriti Film Club’s mission is to use films as a tool for
‘social impact’
by positively influencing mindsets, behaviour and actions, towards creating an equitous, just, and peaceful world. This is achieved through access, awareness, conversation and engagement with diverse audience groups. Till
recently, our repertoire has primarily included documentary films on development, environment, and socially relevant issues, and now also fiction, animation, music videos, etc. We also curate issue-based film festivals and organise documentary film shows in
neighbourhoods, communities, schools, colleges, or institutions on request and otherwise. The Kriti Film Club has remained non-funded and come this far organically in viewership and filmmaker collaborations. We have organised independent screenings once a
month in Delhi NCR since 2000; in Mumbai since 2019, and online (Doculive.blogspot.com)
since 2020, to promote 'thought-provoking cinema' #impactcinema In
this milestone year, we need your support to sustain and grow in our mission and reach, so make a contribution today or reach out for institutional funding to us.
