Deleted the last post bc someone told me it sounded like I was telling people I have STDs. Not what I meant. Since the NPI numbers came out all of our info is online. One listing has my name and a list of STDS. Clicked on it and it shows my address and phone number so Now people can call me to treat their STD's. I am a special educator but people will think I am a doctor. Has anyone else looked up their name? They give out home addresses and phone numbers for anyone to see. Anyone else concerned about this?

Keri, I looked for you online because I was curious.  I only found a link to a search engine that said you were a retired doctor.  Then I changed the search to add more specifics and all I found was that your middle name is Anne.  I have very little of my information out there and somehow a few of my families have gotten my home number without me giving it to them even before this process.  Just thought you'd like to know that a simple search didn't bring you up.  Hope this makes you feel a little better,

Kris

How is it that you are being looked up? I am a computer dummy so I'd like to know how people would look me up ...that doesn't seem right at all!  I couldn't find you unless you are the gal from Indiana!

I use Bing and put in my name and NY.  You did not see the site where I can treat STDS?

Well Amy and Keri this is not as straight forward as one would think.  Unfortunately the internet is getting crappier and crappier as we speak.  It used to be that you and I could put the same search criteria in and get the same results.  That meant that if I went to Bing or Google or Yahoo and I put in "go dogs go" looking for Dr. Suess's book that we would all be sent to the same URL (website).  Now Bing and Google and Yahoo have found ways to market what we search.  This means that every search you do ever on your computer gets kept in some secret file somewhere and the internet "thinks" for you.  This means that my search for "go dogs go" might come up with adoptable dogs in the area because I tend to visit the Heart of the Catskills
website a lot.  If Keri bought a ton of dog food through the internet from Petco (just a guess) then her search for "go dogs go" might turn up a sale on dog food.  And Amy being the literacy nut she is might actually get the book she was looking for.  This means that Kari has visited the website that says she treats STD's while I have not.  Now the "thinking" internet will show Kari that website more and more the more she clicks on it while I may never see the website offered because I haven't found that one yet.

I did put a little more information into finding Keri and I found current and past addresses (not sure they are really her but probably as she spells her name as she does).  I may have found past highschool students she may know and some names of friends/family but I'm not even sure I have the right Keri.

Unfortunately all our information is out there and I know a number of people that I could give a name to and could probably get your name address phone and probably your SS number or a credit card number.  Our information hasn't been personal for years I hate to say.  But don't think that this means you need to run out there and get a ton of protections, no one is interested in finding us contrary to popular belief and as long as you are relatively low key and all that you shouldn't have problems.

Now after that rather long lesson in the internet that I'm sure most of you didn't need :) I have to pack for my weekend sailing trip :)  Have a great weekend everyone!

Before getting an NPI number putting my name into a search engine did not yield the results it does now!  I know bc I check every once in awhile since I unfortunately dated someone who I left and he stalked me for year.  That was years ago and he did not own a computer and was a dumb ass.  Now, my info. is all over the place.  It all has to do with NPI numbers.  NPI numbers are for doctors and it is allowed to be published on the internet.  We are not doctors, we do not have public offices so it is much different for us.  I would not care if I had an office with a number that did not lead back to my home where I live with my daughter.  For me, this is a problem I did not need to have to deal with bc NYS changed things without thinking.
