Yesterday I checked on the bean seeds sown direct at the end of May. A few of the Greek Gigantes climbing beans are at seedling stage and I should be happy to see these cheery little shoots, but all is not well in the bean beds.
Adult bean seed fly looks very similar to the the common housefly, so not exactly easy to spot. Active from May onwards they lay their eggs in soil and are particularly attracted to fresh compost. Whoops!
I tried soaking the beans overnight in 6 cups of water -- 14 hours, to be exact. Then I drained the original water, put in the rest of the ingredients, and cooked on Low in the slow cooker for 10 hours (the recipe said 8-9 hours).

I served them for dinner and I can say they were incredible. Flor de Junio are solid but tender and perfect for this kind of dish. Having some friends over for dinner with a few family members, serving beans, pouring wine, listening to good music and plenty of laughs felt like normal. The work wasn't over, but I was back.

The objective of this research was to assess the effects of a snack bar enriched with api-api mangrove (Avicennia marina) and sword bean (Canavalia ensiformis) on the body weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) of older people individuals afflicted by a landslide event.
Methods: A non-randomized pre-post-intervention study was undertaken, involving 31 senior participants. The intervention group consisted of 15 seniors who were provided with a mangrove sword bean snack bar, while the control group comprised 16 seniors who received a sword bean food bar during 15 days. All study participants received education on maintaining a balanced diet for older people individuals. The data analysis involved using univariate and bivariate analyses, explicitly applying the independent t-test and dependent t-test.

Furthermore, the provision of comprehensive nutrition education has the potential to enhance the post-study knowledge score, as seen by the observed increase of 40.6. A significant disparity was observed between the mean carbohydrate consumption and understanding of balanced nutrition among the intervention and control groups.
Conclusion: Api-api mangrove sword bean snack bars have been identified as a viable and efficient substitute for emergency food provisions, particularly in disaster-stricken communities. These food bars have demonstrated a significant capacity to contribute to the weight gain of individuals within such groups, thus addressing the nutritional needs of impacted populations in the aftermath of natural calamities. Subsequent investigations may include employing pregnant women as participants to explore the issue above.
Hi all,
today I am making veggie chili and i am using dried beans for the first time. Red beans and black beans. soaked them according to package directions (in seperate pots, 5 cups of water to about 1 lb of dried beans, brought to boil for 2 mins, then sat for an hour w lid on). The thing is the beans never got soft and tender, and it had been well over an hour. So i thought, okay well they will cook the rest of the way in the chili, esp if I throw in crock pot for hours.
am starting to think i was clearly wrong about that and that i should just dump this whole batch of chili. i read beans will never cook w tomato sauce bc of the acidity (and sadly i already added that).
any ideas? is this a losing game? what if i used an immersion blender on the beans? would that make it cook any better?

Mr. Bean works as a security guard at the "Royal National Gallery" in London, but is always causing problems. Because of this, the gallery's board of directors, who wish to fire him for always being late for work, constantly sleeping on the job, and having no manners, decided to send him to America under the pseudonym of "Dr. Bean" to oversee the transfer of the painting Whistler's Mother to the Grierson Art Gallery in Los Angeles, California. In truth, this was done so that they'll be rid of him for a while. Meanwhile at the aforementioned art gallery, David Langley, Grierson's curator, was impressed by Mr. Bean's profile, unaware that the details are not true. He offered to let Bean stay at his home for two months. Upon returning home, David tells his family of it, who were against the offer of letting Bean into their home. David's wife, Alison, is hostile about having to look after him, while David's teenage and rebellious daughter Jennifer calls Bean a creep and considers him "ugly as Meat Loaf's butt".
During the plane ride to America, Bean accidentally falls alsleep on the lap of man sitting beside him. This made the man so uncomfortable that he is forced to change seats. After a while, Bean took a kid's barf bag, which has vomit inside, blows into it, and makes the bag blow up with his hands, which splattered puke all over a passenger in front of him, which is the same man who sat beside Bean. Once at the airport, Mr. Bean pulls a prank on the police by pretending to have a gun. Consequently, this resulted in a chase, which leads to Bean's arrest by Lieutenant Brutus, who is unsettled by the latter's odd behaviour. Once released, Bean meets David Langley and his family, with whom he is to stay for his visit. Despite winning the affection of Kevin Langley, David's son (played by Andrew Lawrence)
Alison later leaves after Bean breaks a family heirloom while fiddling with a CD player. In his wife's absence, David offers to take Bean on a tour of the Los Angeles art galleries. However, Bean decides that he would rather go to Pacific Park. The pair go on a motion simulator ride that Bean wants to go to, however, he didn't seem to have much fun at all (even to the point of falling asleep), and exits the ride as normal. However, upon discovering the control room of the ride unattended and reading the manual on how to maneuver it, Bean decides to make the ride faster. Having modified the ride to be more exciting for him (to the expense and horror of David and the other riders), Bean is swiftly detained by Brutus again. Back at home, Bean's attempt to cook a turkey (in less than 5 hours) for David's boss and his wife fails when the microwave explodes, spraying turkey flesh all over the kitchen. Afterwards, David seriously doubts Bean's knowledge of art, so he asks him simple, somewhat obvious questions about art and finds that he is not a doctor after all and that he knows nothing about art.
Once the painting arrives at the gallery, Bean is given a few minutes alone to study it for his grand "speech" at the official revealing ceremony. However, whilst dusting the frame, Bean sneezes on the painting and wipes it with a handkerchief, not knowing that it is covered in blue ink. Terrified, Bean takes it to the caretaker's cupboard to get some agent by which to remove the ink. Unfortunately, he uses lacquer thinner, which causes the paint to lift. He rubs it but the face was removed as a result of a said substance. Bean attempts to patch it up with an extremely unconvincing cartoon face. On seeing it, David Langley is horrified and hides the painting in the metallic frame. Fearing he will lose his job and possibly face criminal proceedings for the vandalism of Whistler's Mother, David and Bean drown their sorrows with alcohol.
