I was very disappointed with how the situation could be turned around
into a race issue (I felt the Superindentant was implying that as well
as the last speaker).

I don't think that anyone would complain about a Choice School being
put there that brought in elementary age Title 1 students. It is
the fact that this school will be for high school kids, and therefore,
new and inexperienced drivers, that is at issue.

Can you imagine high school drivers tearing around the corner of
Heritage/Meadowvale or flying down any of those neighborhood streets
trying to get to class or other event on time?

I don't understand why that image doesn't terrify everyone (including
the Superintendant). I fear for the safety of any child who happens
to be going to the park, ERRC, or even simply playing in their front
yards.

It has been said that this will be temporary for nine graders, most of
whom will not be old enough to drive. I can live with that, but don't
really see the wisdom in it. The second year will include 10th
graders, though. They will be novice drivers. Perhaps still a
little scared about the machine that they are driving, but perhaps
not.

If the board renegs on their promise to make it a temporary site (we
would be naive not to consider that a possibility), will traffic
lights go in either at Heritage/Briarcliff, Briarwillow/Briarcliff, or
Woodwardia/Briarcliff? If not, I wonder how long it will take to
clear out the traffic in the afternoons.

West-do you have a link to the newspaper article in AJC or other press?

It will be horrendous, regardless of whether the drivers are experienced.  The small, narrow street CANNOT handle that traffic.  It just so happens that work from 1 to 5 and I drive Heritage every day.  The busses are there when I leave at 12:45 or so -- only 5 or 6.  But, they create a traffic problem if there is oncoming traffic.

Race, my butt.  That never came up!  Where are they getting that?!  I AM afraid of the young drivers, though, like you said.  And there are quite a few kids in the 9th grade who ARE old enough to drive -- those that got held back a grade or two.  Thank you for sharing your thoughts and concerns.

When I went to the meeting last night at Briarcliff HS, they never said Heritage was decided upon.  They said they were looking at 5 to 7 schools and Heritage is one of the proposals.

As I pointed out to them last night, when I went up to the mike (and durn -- I forget to mention these schools are within 3 miles of Heritage) -- these are the schools that feed directly or indirectly off of B'cliff:
Lakeside
Heritage
Hawthorne
Oak Grove
Oak Grove Methodist Pre School
Sagamore
Briarlake

How much more can the roads and the people bear?  (Share this online if you'd like; I didn't take the time to learn how to share at the group site.  Thanks.)

Probably it will be about race, too. Per the article I listed below, in Chicago "minorities make up 92 percent of the cadet population. Only 4 percent are white, compared to 8 percent of the general Chicago public schools population.

There are no public school military academies in Chicago's suburbs. That disturbs Pauline Lipman, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago's College of Education.

PAULINE LIPMAN, University of Illinois at Chicago: When we talk about how these are good schools for these kids, one of the things we want to think about is, why are they not in upper-middle-class white communities? Why are they good schools for low-income African-American and Latino students and not good schools for affluent white kids?"

This is about recruiting, regardless of what Dr Lewis told us!  And, like the recruiters,  they will target more low-income families and minorities.

Now, them manipulating the whole situation, by transforming our issue into a racial one, this is shameless!

Most disturbing about the last speaker at the meeting is the fact that
he's not a Dekalb county resident. He lives with a friend of mine in
Grant Park.

Secondly, can we put Citizens for Success on Facebook?
