around it so not a clear shot but the best I could do.... I should have shot

I have found three battery tenders and chargers for motorcycles (compact) at
an online accesories website. The tender goes for $13.99 and the chargers for
$9.99 and $8.44. They all seem small enough to be strapped under the seat.
The address is posted below.

I own a 98 1200S H-D Sportster. My insurance for it is $318 per year. I just
called on the Victory and from the same company was quoted $453 and this was
discounted for now insuring 2 bikes. This brought the Sportster down to $287
which tell me that the Victory insurance rates are out of sight.

What kind of other prices are out there. My agent is checking around for a
better deal.

Sure hope that deleting the first 1000 messages will help here. I logged on

Just had to tell everyone I picked up my red #320 today with a Uhaul. Pouring
rain all day but it stayed clean inside. As far as prices go I think it went
well. The bike was 13,500 which included the dealer prep and inspection. They
also installed the windshield at no cost and gave me 25% off the $399 price.
Also got Victory oil and filter for free and 25% off a Victory leather
jacket.

PS SOUNDS GREAT!!!! VROOOOOM

We are reading each post, and only saving the ones with ANY info on the bike

instrument cluster reset/still
hard starting

transcribed from Victory 0310299 It's a free country. Act like it.
____________________ +Called the dealership today to relay the info re the
cluster resetting to zero. The mechanic said he's seen this a few times
already and would contact Victory about it for advice. The owner said that he
was under the impression the E-Prom upgrade would fix this. I was under the
impression that the E-Prom upgrade would cure the hard starting. Apparently
neither one of us is correct? He also thought that the odometer would
re-establish itself once it was ridden.

So, a short while ago, I geared up for a ride and went out to the 56o garage
where it took 10 minutes to finally start. I kill-switch cycled several times
and didn't use the fast idle lever, but no go. After several minutes of this,
I cracked the throttle slightly and didn't use the fast idle lever. This
caused a sputtering attempt at starting, so I continued this method,
eventually getting it to kick by adding fast idle occasionally. I'm still not
pleased that this bike doesn't kick right over.

What exactly is the E-Prom upgrade supposed to accomplish?

14 miles later, I still read 14 miles. So apparently my odometer HAS lost
1100+ miles8^(. I'll call again tomorrow and let them know.

I immediately put the bike back on the battery tender once again, which took
about 20 minutes to return to full storage charge. This has got me curious as
well, because when I park the Sporty and put it immediately on the tender, it
goes to full storage charge in less than a minute.

I wonder why the lithium battery Sparky Bill referenced isn't mentioned in
either the owner's or service manual? Or is it and I've missed it?

Ride on.

Through my dealer its called motorcycle plus service contract. $25
deductible, nationwide service and more. 36, 48 and 60 month plans with 5
year plan costing $980.00. If you never need to use the service contract ( if
bike never breaks down after factory warranty is over )you can file for a
100% refund within 30 days after service contract ends. this sounds like a
win/win kind of thing. Its called the DFS advantage.

Well, today was the first time I've wrenched on the Vic. I performed the
500mi check w/ oil change and installed the slash cut pipes and chip.
(figured i'd save $120 in labor charges) Initially, I planned on installing
the turn out mufflers, but when I returned home and opened the box, one of
the mufflers had a large dent in the tip. And would'nt you know it, it was
the only set of turnouts the dealer had in stock, so I settled for the slash
cuts. What's a few more decibels going to hurt anyway! It seems that you
can't have a large enough variety of tools around. Apparently a set of long
T-handled metric allen wrenches is giong to be a necessity for doing
maintanance on this bike, as well as a very shallow oil drain pan. I also cut
the oil filter open and inspected the element against the shop light.
Amazingly, I found little evidence of metal shavings from the engine during
break in, as well as a very small amount on the magnetic drain plug. The only
thing that really bugs me is the design of the oil dipstick/filler neck.
Hopefully Polaris will come out with a rigid extension that will raise the
opening to avoid burns and spills on the exhaust. Then again, I'm not going
to hold my breath!

I am sure you will find that there is a place for one there but it was not
put in. Think about it folks. Unplug your computer tonight and plug it back
in in the morning. Is the time right. Does your manael tell you that you have
a litium battery on the motherboard either sodered on or under a clip. How
will the cluster remember the mileage if the power is removed??? These are
suppose to be very long lifed but all things fail as well. I was told that
this was just an oversight but I would have thought that they all knew about
this. The dealers that is.

The E-Prom I understand is JUST for the engine FI computer. It contains the
programing for how the engine should react to differnent readings back from
the engine sensors. Nothing to do with the mileage.

Hope you all well.

BTW I will have my 1213 within 50 miles of it birth place by the 27th and if
roads are clear will take a run toward Spirit Lake. I will not get there as I
will not want to hit the open road that long. Will try to break in town as
much as possible to vary the speeds and break in the tranny as well.

Personally I think the dealer is jerking you around. I'm up here in Michigan
and #960 starts up everytime...that is after I figured out how to do it when
its freezing out(low 30's).

Before I hit the starter I give it half throttle and hold it there. It starts
right away. As far as when the temps are in the high 40's it starts without
touching the trottle.

As far as the speedo reseting I have disconnected my battery to wire up the
battery tender and it kept the setting just fine but then again it was only
disconnected for about 15 minutes.

____________________ +Since I was able to get TRAVLR started last night, I
took a leap of faith and decided to attempt the 200 mile commute. Garage temp
is about 50o. Got it going with 5 minutes of effort; we're getting there.
Slapped the throwover saddlebags on, strapped 'em to the diagonal frame
members (nice, very nice), and off I go.

Outside temp is around 19o with the non-threat of a non-existant 'noreaster,
but sun with high, light clouds and only occasional icy spots on the back
country roads. One spot I cross is a wooden, single-span bridge which I
negotiated with the back wheel coming around to the left. Well, that's
essentially cause that's the way it needed to be cause my turn's right there
don't ya' know8^). Only another 10 miles before I hit the entrance ramp at
the foothills of the mountain range. Ahhhh.

TRAVLR seems to like 2nd to 4th for the roads I'm on. Next, the hilly 4-laner
at 55-65 warrants a tip down to 4th from 5th in some spots. Especially
fighting the traffic that surrounds me, which is somewhat heavy today. Later
on, while coming home on many miles of winding, hilly two-lane county roads,
I'll notice that TRAVLR really seems to like 4th, up to, and including 60,
dependent upon the terrain. On all roads, the revs seem to want at least 3k+
to be comfortable. Less than that, and I seem to notice lugging.

Hopping back to the commute, surprisingly the latter 6-lane interstate (3/3
w/large median) has lesser traffic than normal. Thus goes my ride into lower
Manhattan from my little (big) log cabin in the mountains.

Message 1364 of 3424 long strange trip (pt. 2) rdkil1 (38/M/Walker Valley,

I had put my spare hippo hands on, and, coupled with the silks and my polar
mitts, they'll serve well.

The fly screen protects you from chill at stomach/lower-rib level. Your
mid-to-upper chest will catch the full wind and your legs will be in the
breeze. Dress warmly in the cold, friends.

(I dream that) TRAVLR is very stable at freeway speeds approaching 90+ with
cars vying for the good spots too. It was a pleasant dream because I win8^).

During the day Snow from Yahoo said in temps of low 30s, he cranks the
throttle half way, keeps it there and it starts right away. In temps 40+, he
doesn't need throttle.

I also advise Mark at Cycle Connection of my status, and the fact that I'm in
the city, unsure of TRAVLR's true ability to start. We discuss Snow's advice,
which he feels may help. He assures me that a truck will remain available
should I experience any difficulty.

TRAVLR's been sitting on the street in the 30s. Cover comes off, disk lock
off, steering lock off, key in, people have gathered. Mind you, I'm in
leather chaps, and full leather duster with a denim vest full of state,
provincial & motorcycle organization patches on a major city's busy street.
Briefcase is in a leather satchel that also carries my lunch box and thermos.
I'm not normal to these people, so they tend to stare.

Throttle 1/4 turn (all things in moderation friends). Key on. No cycle of the
kill switch. Starts within 5 seconds and I immediately kick up the revs
lightly with the fast idle lever. More people stare from across the corner.

While TRAVLR is in its gradually adjusted 5-minute idle, I throw all of my
final gear on (balaclave, bandanna, helmet) and bundle up tight. On I sit,
and off I go. People really stare. TRAVLR DOES tend to bark its existence
when necessary;^)

TRAVLR, by the way, is much wider than RDKIL (my Sportster). I cannot split
lanes with such ease with this one (though still much bravado), and find
myself tapping mirrors.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Message 1365 of 3424 long strange trip (pt. 3) rdkil1 (38/M/Walker Valley,
NY) Feb 20 1999 2:42AM EST

I stop at Cycle Connection and chat with Joe Klein and ask him to let Mark
know that it was able to start, and I will continue with this technique and
alert him of any problems. Joe can't get his Rock to Rock bike from display,
and jokes that he's not gonna buy another just to ride down to Daytona. He
wants to go, man, I can see it in his eyes. I joke that he could've added
Conch (cause we'd go on to Key West) below Rock to Rock ("to Conch") to
indicate his bike's next great journey. Shucks, he would've been great
company.

With the same procedure, TRAVLR starts right up again outside and once again,
off I go.

Here's where it gets funny.

Route 17 through Paramus is 6 lanes with a concrete barrier and full access.
It is solid full of entrances and exits to gas stations, restaurants, stores,
small malls, major malls, car dealers, dunkin dognuts, and every single fast
food type establish you can think of. For many miles. Right after the
intersection of another similar 6-lane highway leading from the George
Washington Bridge. Traffic, shall we say, is heavy.

I'm in the left lane, right after the first multi-mile market grouping in a
heavy cluster of traffic. There is no center median, only a concrete barrier.
Tripmeter says 126, fuel gauge says 2.6 gallons, TRAVLR sputters and dies. At
60.

Slap the flashers on quick, glance over my right shoulder at the dark Chevy
Impala (hmmmm, looks like a cop.) and aim for the shoulder past the other
lanes. So does Mr. Impala. I make it first and he overshoots me. TRAVLR rolls
a good distance, and then to a stop a foot from his bumper.

At this point I'm unsure of Mr. Impala, who hasn't moved from his seat. But
he flashes an 'ok' sign with his fingers while I dismount to the right and
ponder. 2.6 gallons, 132 miles (6 pre-cluster-reset). What's going on? While
standing TRAVLR up from the right side, I open the gas cap, shake him, & sure
enough, bone dry. This was a non-occurrence before recall work. Since recall
work, I've run out of fuel twice without warning accompanied by inaccurate
gauges. This time was dangerous.

Still pondering Mr. Impala, who proffers another "ok" sign, I put the gas cap
back on, lean it back over on the sidestand, and mosey on over to chat. I
glance at the Marine Corps sticker on the back of his car.

"Semper Fi" says I (former Staff Sgt.), and he says he was a biker and
noticed immediately that I had a problem when I made the dart for the side.
Says he lives about a mile from here and offers to get some gas in a can, and
off he goes.

Before I can truly wonder about the situation, up shoots Mr. Impala. And this
time I didn't even see him coming. Out comes a can and funnel. In goes about
a gallon and it starts right up. He wouldn't take even a buck for the fuel.

I didn't have any further problems and the rest of the ride home, even though
I couldn't feel my big toe later on for over an hour due to the cold, was
actually VERY pleasant. I'm gonna like this scoot.

I'm looking forward to the fix for this latest concern.

Doug W, I'm still looking to link up for a ride to Daytona. Please send me a
note.

Ride on.
