Hi Everyone. You really lost me on the "Hell and Damnation" series!
What brought all that up?

Asking questions like that just might bring it all up again... :)

Basically, someone saw Temple-->Northridge's evangelism plan, which
include the line "persist until they're converted" or something like
that. The "persist" thing was objectionable to some, which brought back
vivid memories of judgmental, pressure-filled evangelistic scenarios
back at TCS, which seem contrary to the spirit of the cool free gift,
take it or leave it, that's being offered to whosoever will. I think
that's kinda it in a nutshell.

BTW, thought our intolerance thread would've gotten more input. Oh
well... :)

So how 'bout those Red Wings?

Hello everyone. Those Wings rock. So does Shanny! He be the man.

As far as NorthRidge goes, don't despair. Although that statement does
somewhat sound like the Temple Country Club and the Falwell regime, it
is not the spirit of the place. You realize it if you were to attend.
It is so far removed from the old Temple, hence the name change. The
church is not the same church that we all attended so many years ago.
Brad is a real zealot, but not in the sence of the old farts. He got a
real kick out of my poem about Wendell Zimmerman, one of the old BBC
cronies. He is a different breed of person, believe me, than the
others. No comparison in Temple, now NorthRidge, AT ALL!!!

Jill,

From the tone of this post, you obviously had a very negative
experience at some point in your life with the old Temple. I, on the
other hand, had a very positive experience there.

That being said, I would never make a sacred cow out of it (the old
Temple). I would NEVER suggest that Temple should always be the same
Temple I grew up in. But I would not characterize Temple's history in
terms of "regimes", either. You disparage those who developed the
resources to make the "new and improved" Temple possible, rather than
valuing them for having the vision to make Temple happen in the first
place. NorthRidge would never had had the financial resources to do
what it is presently doing if it hadn't been for "the old farts."

You are a cheerleader for Brad in much the same way as our parents and
their generation were cheerleaders for Dr. Vick. You disparage making
a hero out of Dr. Vick and his "cronies" while raising Brad to near god-
status.

The old Temple was wrong to raise Dr. Vick to that level and yet this
new generation at NorthRidge appears to be making the same mistake.
Beware of being focused on personalities rather than on Jesus.

You hit a soft spot with me, Jill and I certainly do not mean to come
across as mean spirited on this issue. I hope you will receive this in
the spirit of grace in which it is intended.

Hey Paul,

I had good and bad experiences at Temple as did many others in our
class and many who were not.

And as far as regimes go, I am not referring to Dr. Vick in any
manner. He was the one who built the church to be what it was and
there were not many who could fill his shoes. No one was more a part
of the Dr. Vick regime than my family. But we also realized that the
church was not the leader (why the Catholic religion is so far off),
but about God. Everyone thought the second coming would happen before
Dr. Vick ever died. Well that was 1975 when he died and we're still
here!

He wasn't the "regimes" I was referring to anyway. He did nothing to
damage the image or the integrity of the church. I do believe you know
who I am speaking of and his initials were no A.V.H. either. He led
the church in a similar manner to Dr. Vick, but Truman Dollar, on the
other hand, had a few too many shady things goin' on to not call that a
regime. That is what I am referring to. And it has nothing to do with
the reason he was forced to leave Temple. Brad Powell took a group of
people who were stagnating and made somehting, through God, happen that
wasn't happening before. You can call him whatever you want, but
there's more happing there now than there was before, so how is that
wrong? He has not made any choices by himself. Every move he has
made, whether physical or philosophical, has been through the body of
the church. All things have to be approved and voted on just like in
the old days! If the majority of the leadership didn't want to do what
they've done, it would not have happened.

You did come across a little odd, and I don't mean to berate you, but I
think you have offered an opinion, not fact, about the church and Brad
Powell. And I don't go on Sunday to worship Brad, I go to worship
Jesus.

Paul, you should try coming to NorthRidge again. You have to try it
more than once, though. We just might find you dancin' in the aisles
if you were to come twice!
