fantasy.

CHAPTER ONE

Understanding the ways of men still baffled Wonder Woman. She had been
in "Man's World" for more than 50 years, yet she was still surprised by
some of the things men did. Rather, how women in this world remained
subservient to men.

For example, just last night she had to break up a couple that was
fighting. Wonder Woman watched from a nearby rooftop as the argument
began. It started as simple bickering but quickly escalated into a
physical confrontation. Before long, the man hit his pregnant
"girlfriend" in the face sending her to the ground, helpless. Quickly,
the Amazon princess leaped off the rooftop and landed between the two.
She adopted her "power pose," placing her hands on her hips with her
legs spread shoulder-length apart.

"Now, is that any way to treat a lady?" she asked mockingly. The man
charged her, but Wonder Woman was more than ready. She picked the
attacker up and slammed him against the brick wall of a nearby abandoned
building, knocking him out cold.

Wonder Woman was about to take him into custody when the victim screamed
at her. "Stop hurting Darrin! Stop beating up my man!" she said. Wonder
Woman froze and eyed the woman. She was practically a child. She
couldn't have been more than 17 and was already at least six months
pregnant. She had bruises on her face, and not just the ones incurred in
this encounter. One eye was nearly swollen shut and tears streamed down
her face.

"Why?" Wonder Woman asked. "Why should I not arrest him?"

"It-it-it's my f-f-f-fault," the woman stammered through the tears. She
had shoulder-length blonde hair, tattered white jeans and a faded purple
T-shirt. "I brought it on-on-on myself."

"No one deserves what he was doing to you," Wonder Woman thought, but
she knew telling that to this girl would not do any good. Wonder Woman
just eyed the woman for 10 long seconds and said only, "What's your
name?"

"Ka-Ka-Kathy," the girl finally got out.

"Kathy, you may think you don't deserve better, but think about your
child," Wonder Woman said. "Doesn't your future son or daughter deserve
a better life? Think about that. Please. Go to a shelter. Get some help.
Get some medical attention. Take care of yourself and your baby, even if
this scum won't." Kathy only nodded her head, trying to stifle her
tears.

Wonder Woman then turned to the man, who was beginning to come around.
She scooped him up off his feet by the collar, holding his face inches
from hers. "As for you, if I see you doing this to ANY other woman, you
will know the full wrath of an Amazon." The man only groaned as Wonder
Woman dropped him unceremoniously on his butt, then leaped back to the
top of the building.

That was last night. It wasn't the first (or probably the last) time
Wonder Woman had seen something like that. She knew from experience she
couldn't make someone get help that didn't want it and the Amazon knew
if she had brought the man in, his girlfriend would have probably spent
whatever food money she had posting bail for the louse. It was a
difficult situation, but embarrassing and scaring the men sometimes
worked. If it didn't set them straight, it usually woke the woman up
enough to either get out of the "relationship" or start asserting
herself in other ways.

Tonight, Wonder Woman was back on the same rooftop, scouring the area
for whatever muggers, rapists or other hooligans might be looking for
easy marks. Suddenly she heard a familiar voice.

"I said stop it!" cried a woman's voice. Wonder Woman quickly raced to
the other end of the roof and looked over. It was Kathy and Darrin in
virtually a repeat of the night before. He had her arm in a vice grip
and spun her around.

"No way!" he responded. "You'll do what I say and that's that! Wonder
Woman or no Wonder Woman, I still own you."

"You're hurting me," Kathy yelled, tears beginning to fall. That was
enough for Wonder Woman. She wasn't naïve enough to think every man she
ever stopped from beating a woman quit forever, but this was the first
time someone had so brazenly defied her.

Wonder Woman jumped off the top of the roof and landed perfectly on the
pavement. "I warned you," she said, the hostility not hidden in her
voice. "And now you'll see what it means to test the benevolence of an
Amazon."

With that, she began marching towards the attacker. This time, Darrin
raced into the vacant building rather than face Wonder Woman. The
superheroine feigned like she was going to chase him then stopped to
make sure Kathy was OK.

"I'm fine," Kathy said. "Thanks for coming again. I was worried you
wouldn't be here again tonight. I'm taking your advice for sure now.
Darrin's never going to change."

"I'm glad you see that," Wonder Woman said. "Now, I'll go take care of
him. You go call the police and get them here. Tell them I'll have some
garbage for them to pick up." Kathy nodded and began to walk towards a
bar down the street.

With Kathy safely out of the way, Wonder Woman turned to taking care of
Darrin. She knew the rear exit was sealed - a dumpster blocked the door.
It was simply a matter of finding him and teaching him a lesson in
manners he wouldn't soon forget.

The Amazon moved silently through the building. In its glory days, she
imagined it was a bustling factory producing some sort of widget that
had long ago lost its usefulness. It had the smell of dust that had
caked for decades and baked in the summer heat.

"Darrin," she yelled, her cries echoing throughout the dark building.
"Come out and I'll take it easy on you." Silence was her only response
for a second then she heard feet scuttling towards the rear of the
building. Wonder Woman ran towards the noise, saw a man and tackled him
hard from behind. With amazing speed, she regained her balance, scooped
up the man and tossed him again against the wall - this time harder than
the previous evening.

Slowly, Wonder Woman walked towards the fallen man and turned him over.
It wasn't Darrin.

No sooner did that recognition sink in than the building lit up with
bright lights. As her eyes adjusted, she noticed more than three dozen
armed men wearing sunglasses and black leather jackets with red trim.
They were a gang called the Vampires, a group of thugs who "earned their
stripes" by committing bloody, violent crimes. The vast amount of blood
and blood-drawn graffiti on the walls near each crime scene were their
calling cards.

Wonder Woman dropped the unconscious thug and turned to face her
attackers. Taking on several men at once was not unusual, but the
cramped quarters would make things difficult. Getting the proper spacing
and leverage might be a problem, but it also limited the number of
people who could charge her at once. Plus she had to keep alert for
possible shots being fired. The Vampires were well known for their
willingness to shoot each other to bring down a target. And once blood
was seen, no matter whose it was, it only seemed to feed their frenzy.

But no one moved. After a full half-minute of eyeing each other, Wonder
Woman finally said, "So, boys, how's it going to be? You going to go
quietly or is there going to be a problem?"

Again, no one spoke. After almost another tense 30 seconds of staring
each other down (at least Wonder Woman thought they were staring each
other down … she couldn't tell for sure because of the sunglasses) the
middle of the group parted slightly, allowing Darrin to take center
stage.

"There's no problem, Wonder Bread," he said smugly. "Everything's
juuuuuuust fine." With that, Darrin stepped back to reveal Kathy on her
knees, a gun pressed against her bowed head.

"You rotten man," Wonder Woman said, a snarl passing her ruby red lips.
"That's supposed to be your girlfriend, the mother of your child. Don't
you have ANY feelings for her?"

"This cunt?" Darrin asked laughing. "I'm not the father. At least I
don't think I am. She's like a turkey the day after Thanksgiving -
everyone's had a piece of her."

Wonder Woman quickly surveyed the room. Kathy's situation made
everything a lot more difficult. She would have to take care of her
first, then the rest of the room. As the Amazon looked above, she
noticed some of the snipers in the rafters weren't pointing their
weapons at her, but at Kathy. Plus she noticed security cameras mounted
on the beams. They were too new to be from the previous occupant of the
warehouse.

"What do you want?" Wonder Woman finally asked. She figured as long as
she kept talking, nothing would happen to Kathy.

"What I want is simple, Wonder Bread," Darrin replied. "What I'll get
will be even better." He slowly began walking towards Wonder Woman. "You
see, you've caused problems for hard-working young men like us for
years, and you've always done it with tiresome lectures about the
virtuosity of womanhood and the evils of men. But your virtues are also
your weakness, and that is why men will always dominate women."

"What do you mean?" Wonder Woman responded, continuing to look for any
opportunity to turn the tables. But the gun at Kathy's head and the ones
in the rafters … she couldn't stop all of them at once.

"I see you looking around," Darrin said, as if reading the Amazon's
mind. "You're looking for a way to get out of the situation. And you
just might find a way. But you probably won't. Except for one way, and
that's what separates us."

"What?" Wonder Woman repeated.

"Let the girl die," he said simply.

With that, Kathy screamed and tried to get away but a guard shoved her
and put the gun back to her forehead. Wonder Woman started to move, but
realized she couldn't get there before any bullet was fired so she
stayed put.

By now, Darrin was three yards from Wonder Woman. He was a half-foot
shorter than she but he was muscular. Compared to many men, he was
strong … not strong enough to take out an Amazon, but strong. He had a
dark 48-hour stubble, yellow teeth and sandy blonde hair. He was walking
a little gingerly from the night before, but looked none the worse for
the wear. As he had approached Wonder Woman, a few others had closed in
as well, forming a semi-circle around the heroine.

"You know I can't do that," Wonder Woman finally said.

"I know," Darrin said almost soothingly. "That's why we're here." Darrin
turned left and waved, then turned right and waved again. Four men put
down their weapons, picked up videocameras and jogged forward, taking
positions around Wonder Woman.

"You see, Wonder Bread, this is a little experiment in behavior," Darrin
began. "You believe women, especially Amazons, are far superior to men.
And in many regards, you're correct. But in other ways, you are
amazingly wrong. Women, including Amazons, lack a killer instinct. How
many times has a villain gotten out of jail to wreak further havoc
simply because you didn't kill them? Sure, you usually catch them, but
how many problems could be solved if the criminal element were
eliminated rather than incarcerated?"

Wonder Woman interrupted: "But that would mean they have no shot at
redemption and I refuse to believe that. Everyone has some good in them.
It just may take a while to find it."

This statement caused the group to snicker. "Do I have good?" Darrin
asked.

"I believe so," Wonder Woman replied. "It may be deep down, but you have
some good." Again, Wonder Woman's eyes flicked around the room. Kathy
seemed to have calmed down but the gun was still pointed at her head.
The men in the rafters were watching her but their guns were still aimed
towards Kathy. "Good," she thought. "If I need to act, I'll have a
split-second before they can retrain their aim and fire. I just need to
keep talking."

"Well I believe I have some good, too," Darrin said. "In fact, I believe
sharing is good. And the pursuit of happiness, according to the preamble
of the Constitution, is an American right so it must be good." He turned
to the crowd and shouted, "We'll be doing good tonight, boys!"

The room - now filled with about 25 men - laughed again, only this time
louder. Wonder Woman stared at Darrin then asked, "What do you mean?"

"Let me explain. You will do what I say or sweet, innocent, pregnant
Kathy gets shot," Darrin said coolly. "If that happens, sure, you'll
capture most of us … maybe even all of us. But the death of an innocent
girl and an unborn child will weigh on you forever. And you better be
prepared to kill us all because if we're captured we'll tell everyone
how you chose to let innocent people die when you had a chance to save
them."

"And if I agree?" Wonder Woman asked quietly.

Darrin smiled. "Well, there's some good news and bad news with that. The
good news is Kathy goes free, as will you after we insure we get away
safely. The bad news for you is we get rich and an experience we'll
never forget."

Wonder Woman eyed the thug with curiosity.

"Do we have a deal?" Darrin asked. "I know you won't lie. If you agree
to something, you'll honor your bond. Agreeing to the deal will take
Kathy out of immediate danger. So, do we have a deal?"

Wonder Woman looked around one last time. "There's got to be a way out
of this," she thought. But she couldn't see one. Slowly she bowed her
head and said, "We have a deal."

Darrin smiled and turned towards Kathy. "OK, guys. That's cool." With
that, the gun was removed from Kathy's head and the snipers pulled their
weapons back. One of the gang members moved behind Kathy and started
tying her hands together, but some of the tension had eased. Of course,
Wonder Woman had given her word, but she was prepared to go back on that
at the first opportunity. "It's a good thing these men aren't entirely
familiar with Amazon culture," Wonder Woman thought. "No Amazon likes
going back on her word, but we're taught to evaluate all situations and
take the best course. If lying eventually leads to the greater common
good, so be it. Of course, first I have to get out of this."

After Kathy was secured, a couple of guards stood on either side of her
with their weapons drawn, ready for action. Although the snipers were at
ease, they remained in the rafters. The rest of the men, though, began
climbing stairs or hopping on top of some of the tables to get a seat. A
few others grabbed cameras and took positions around the Amazon. When
everyone was in place, Darrin turned back to Wonder Woman.

"Very good," he said. "Now, let's go over a few things. First, as per
our agreement, you will do what we say or Kathy gets it, right?" Wonder
Woman nodded. She noticed the cameras had begun rolling as the little
red lights of each one came on.

"Strip!"

Wonder Woman spun her head to face him, a shocked look etched on her
face. She had no idea what she expected, but it certainly wasn't this.
The villains she faced were interested in loftier things, like world
domination. She had never come across a group as common as this. She
looked around and it began to dawn on her that, aside from Kathy, it was
all male. She had not considered the villains' gender an issue before,
but now the night had taken a dirty turn and it would likely get worse.
