Are you aware that if a Military individual is wounded or killed in
battle by "FRIENDLY FIRE", they are denied the Purple Heart? I can
not find any logic to the fact that a person who is fighting to defend
our country and what it stands for is denied this respect.
On June 13, 1968, my father GSgt. Robert Sproul, USMC, father
of 6 children, was taken from this world and his family, while on
patrol in Viet Nam by a misfired mortar, which was supposed to help
keep the parameter of his mens camp clear of snipers. Someone made an
error. Because of this these men were denied the honor and respect of
receiving this Medal of Honor.
For 31 years this fact has eaten at me, in vain, so far I have
not been able to change this injustice. Recently, through the
Internet, while searching for anyone who might have known my father I
found a Marine who served with him on that fateful night.
It was the media that brought this passion back to life, during
Dessert Storm, speaking of those men and women who gave everything
because of Friendly Fire. I strongly believe that those who made the
mistakes will live with the night mare, they too will be a casualty of
war. I do not understand why those who suffered from their mistakes
must be denied the Right to receive the Purple Heart which they earned.
A page still remains empty in my Fathers scrap book which is
reserved for is much deserved Medal. Please help me to Right this Wrong
by letting those in power Know this needs to be changed.
