hi i just bought a 1972-1973 1700 cc type 2 engine. a guy told me that
i would have to change the tin to a fiberglass convertion kit to put an
exhaust on because the exhaust port is on the bottom. also he said that
the pressure plate would not work and would have to be changed because
of the through out berring(something about the centering ring) in a
type 1 tranney. if anyone knows were to get the fiberglass kit or has
any suggestion that would be great? thanks a lot.

Not sure why you need fiberglass conversion...as I have seen a couple
of buggys with type 2 engines. If I am thinking correctly the
fiberglass conversion kit...is really a Porshe man shroud..and alt. big
$$$!

I could be wrong about that though. Just my 2 cents.

I know a guys around here who built a type 2 because his type 1 kept on
overheating. He is running around with his type 2 with out any cooling
tin. Some people I guess think VW doesn't know what they are doing..and
just always second guess them. I give his newly rebuilt type 2 a couple
of months at most before it dies from over heating.

Deserter,
What you have is a Type 4 engine (they were installed in type 2 buses)
the 1700 is a early one, they came in 1700,1800 and 2000cc. The same
engine they ran in the 914 Porche. I'm running one in my El Lobo buggy.
It's been punched out to close to 3000cc's and I haven't had any
problems so far and I'm running the stock tin. There are lot's of pro's
and con's to this engine, but from what I've heard it is a better
engine than the T1 but is prone to droping valves seats, usually on
high milage engines. Personally I like it and have no plans on
changing. It has an oil filter, better oil cooler, stonger case and
crank and you could lose a fan belt and the engine fan will still run.
Just keep the tin in good shape. Stay with the engine.
