Bodyguard fires gun as Queen sleeps
BY CONAL URQUHART
A ROYAL Protection officer is under investigation after accidentally
firing two shots from his pistol while on duty on the Royal Train
yesterday.
The officer was alone in one of the carriages of the Cardiff-bound
train. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were asleep in another
carriage at the time.
The bullets damaged a table and carpet but no one was hurt. Buckingham
Palace could not say how close the Queen was to the carriage where the
shots were fired, but confirmed that she had been woken.
The pistol, believed to be an Austrian-made 9mm Glock, is the preferred
weapon of the Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Squad. It is known for
having a sensitive trigger.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said that a man had been taken
off firearm duties while its officers carried out an investigation
assisted by British Transport Police and Gwent Constabulary.
