I've been thinking about this for years, and it's something that's
always intrigued me. I'd love to know from you if anyone has ever
heard about, or actually listened to, a different version of the
entire "Writer" album. To make things clearer to all: Years ago (I
can't recall exactly when), I came across "Writer" for the first time.
It's one of those moments which I think you all have gone through - the
feeling of bumping into a "new" Carole album for the first time, even
if it is not exactly a new release (I guess that perhaps is a familiar
sensation to the ones under 35, or to new fans, or to fans outside the
US like me. Anyway, I'm 33!). So far so good? Well, moving on...
Some time later (again, can't remember when), I ran into
another "Writer" LP, at a second hand store, which caught my eye
(because it was the original release, not an Epic reissue like the one
I had bought; and I made up my mind to get it too, and end up having 2
LPs of the same album (only Carole fans will understand!). TO MY GREAT
SURPRISE, upon arriving home, I couldn't believe my ears when I noticed
that, despite being the same album, they actually sounded different,
and by saying sounded different I don't mean that the record was newer,
or less worn out, or that I had changed my loudspeaker system, or
anything like that. The song versions WERE different, the arrangements
WERE different, her voice WAS different, even the length of some tracks
WAS different!!! I thought to myself, "Wow, never heard of 2 versions
of the same album by the same artist!". But the point is, they were
released at the same time, 1970, because it was not the case of a
reissue years later, it was a case of actually re-recording the entire
album in the studio, and don't ask me the reason why because that's
exactly for this reason I'm opening this new discussion!
Now let me know if I'm being TOO late in this matter (Perhaps you have
discussed the subject long before I came to be a member of Deja.com,
and perhaps it's something that every Carole fan knows, and I'm just
being ridiculous in raising such a dated fuss, but please give me an
answer!!!)
To make it sound real, not a bluff by a chatterbox, the version
of "Can't You Be Real?" in the Epic reissue is sung by a MAN, not by
Carole!!! Ah, and of course I kept the 2 versions, one now a CD and
the old LP (the different one!!!)
PLEASE, LET ME KNOW IF I'M BEING TOO LATE IN THIS MATTER!!!

I don't understand here, you all are confusing me. You mean to say
there are TWO different versions of Writer as recorded by Carole King?
Not one of these "versions" that is doctored with added instruments
like has been done to Wrap Around Joy recently.
I'm gonna go and check the old record collection. I'm sure I own
Writer as a reissue on Epic. Do I own this thing and not know it?
Bought it, but never listened to this particular copy? You're gonna
give this 40 something heart failure.. . .

Mike C-- The "different" version of Writer is definitely NOT something
to want to hear! I think it contained the bad mix version of certain
songs. I haven't listened to it in 20 years, don't even know if I kept
it, but, I the differences were subtle and didn't improve original Ode
version. I even wrote to complain to Epic.
What gives with the "alternate" version of "Wrap Around Joy? " Please
elaborate.

Well, the fact that the "different" version doesn't add to
the "original" version's beauty doesn't necessarily make it less
valuable, esp. to us Carole fans. To me it was/is a great plus knowing
that I actually possess 2 "Spaceship Races", 2 "No Easy Way Down", 2
all the other tracks (paying special attention to "Eventually", "Can't
Hear You No More", and "Can't You Be Real?"). I must say that I love
them all, as a good Carole fan.
I'm too glad that I can share that with you, and that I've finally
found a "responsive chord" and my wishes of finding Carole fans to talk
to seem to have been fulfilled, if only abroad (I'm from Brasil!).
It's so great to have representation from your beautiful country in our
Carole Group! I was in Brazil in 1990 (Rio, Sao Paulo, Cabo Frio,) for
two weeks -- one of my favorite trips.
My friend still lives there "so I won't rest until I go back again..."

An Argentinian disc entitled "Carole King" is really Wrap Around Joy
that has been remixed with added instrumental touches. Go A Go Go!
You'll find "The Best Is Yet To Come" there.
Perhaps Regina has seen this disc. It is on "Musimundo" discs and
looks legit! Got Carole's "One To One" picture on the front! and in
the inside offers other discs in their "Coleccion World Music".

oh my, how your keyboards have been humming this afternoon!
a few months ago, on a radio station that barely came in, i
heard "child of mine" and it was indeed the different version. at the
time, i asked bob, and he told me about the alternate version. given
regina's description, i would love to hear it. i guess it's time to hit
the secondhand record stores. (oh, wait, this is 2000.)

Hum hum hummmmmm---Are we talking the 'other' version of "Child Of
Mine" that Carole re-recorded for "Disney For Our Children" cd? That
is really fine. A little faster than the "Writer" version, with Carole
doing superb synth, keyboard work.
I checked out my vinyl CK Writer's. All of 'em are Ode 70 records.
One is in really fine shape considering it is older than I am! ; ) It's
Tapestry that I own Epic Records re-releases of, when they stopped
making it an open up album.
Bob, what label were the Brazilian releases on that you bought?
Epic/Sony? Just curious as to the rights in other countries. There is a
lot of Carole King music being distributed overseas, more than here,
I'd say.
About "The Best Is Yet To Come": I used the Spanish title as it was
listed on "Carole King": "Lo Mejor Esta Por Llegar". I like it!

OK, everyone, I'm reading all this stuff and I'm trying to make sense of
it. What I'm hearing is that there are basically a lot of re-mixes and
re-packages out there, but not genuinely different versions. There
weren't really two versions of "Writer," were there? If so, does
someone want to send me a copy? I'll pay!

Hello, Bob!
Wow! Thanks for being so kind!!! I could never ever have imagined
you had visited my beloved country and city, let alone Cabo Frio (my
family actually lives in that region of the State of Rio de Janeiro).
I guess there was only 1 problem: My name isn't Regina, but Alex, and
I'm a 33 year old man!!!
But never mind, "We are all in this together"!
Bye for now!
Look, there ARE 2 different versions of "Writer" yes!!! To your great
surprise, which had been mine when I found that out, from the
famous "Sony vaults" an alternate version of the album was released
when it was reissued under the Epic label (LP). Our friend Bob reckons
it may be an Epic mistake which was "eventually" (sorry for the pun!)
cast out, and the definitive version appeared on CD and that's the 1 we
all know and have. It was all by coincidence (or fate, I don't know)
that I found the other version at a secondhand store, and that was here
in Rio, Brasil (Would anybody imagine?)!!! The LP is a little worn
out, so I guess I must write it on CD before it fades for good...
The track listing is the same, even the time of the songs, which
doesn't match the "definitive" version (You must check out "I Can't
Hear You No More".).
Now, as Bob puts it, most differences are a little subtle, and an
absent-minded listener may not hear anything "wrong", but who are we,
anyway? Aren't we all avid Carole fans looking forward to anything
which might add to our most pleasurable hobby, which is to admire the
work of our diva? I think that that hobby is met here, even if not by
a genuinely new Carole album, a 2000 one (Gosh, how I'd love to see
that!!!). Even if it's by a different version of an already "oldie".
I guess that what makes this story interesting is that I think few
people know it, and it comes as "fresh material" at our times. We're
in 2000, and knowing that "Writer" was recorded twice by Carole, both
in 1970, goes at least wow!!!
Well, bye for now, friend.
P.S.: I'd like to make clear to some of you that if you're taking me
for any Regina, please reconsider: I'm Alex, 33, male!!!! LOL LOL LOL
Sorry, again, but you may not have taken me for Regina. I've just
found out she's actually a member of our group. I hadn't seen you were
talking to her.
Bye for now!
P.S.: I'm the one from Brasil, OK?
Sorry! I've just found out that there's actually a Regina, who isn't
me, in our group!!!
Sorry for the mistake!!!
Bye for now.
Do you happen to know whose is the male vocal in "Can't You Be Real?" -
"different" version?
Are you the one who saw Carole perform in Rio in 1990?

Hello Alex from Brasil (it's wonderful that our group is expanding
internationally!) Thank you & I would de delighted if you would be
willing to copy this record & send it to me. I would be happy to pay
you for your costs. I am certainly a more than "casual" Carole listener
and would love to hear it!

Look, buddy, I can do it all for free, don't worry!!! The only thing
is that I'm afraid I won't be able to go about it as of now, for my
tape recorder is broken and I haven't got a CD recorder yet. But here
it goes: As soon as I've fixed the former and/or picked up the latter
I'll let you know for sure, and will be extremely glad to send you a
copy via mail, ALL FREE!!! (Looks like one of those porn site ads,
doesn't it? LOL LOL)
Take care,
Alex
