As Jazzman Steve reported:
Some of the songs that Carole chose as her favorites include "You've
Lost That Loving Feeling," "Somewhere Over The Rainbow," "What A
Wonderful World," "People Get Ready," "What Becomes Of The Broken
Hearted," and "God Bless The Child." There might have been another one
or two listed.

What would you 5 favorite non Goffin/King-related songs be? Someone
else had suggested this topic, but, no one ever followed up.

I'm asking that you not list Goffin or King songs as I think this will
make it harder for us...

Bob

My first two are really excellent old chestnuts:

(1) I'll Be Seeing You (...in all the old familiar places / that this
heart of mine embraces all day throughhhhhhhh.....)
(2) Our Love is Here to Stay (the rockies may crumble / gibraltar may
tumble/they're only made of clay / but.....)

the next ones are trivial compared to the above ones, but i thrill every
time i hear them (i don't even own some of them, so it's just luck when
i hear them on the radio or somewhere)

(3) someday we'll be together (the supremes)
(4) more today than yesterday (spiral staircase)
(5) cold turkey (john lennon) (i also like lenny kravitz's version)
(6) natalia (van morrison, from the album 'wavelength,' i think)
(7) caroline no (from beach boys' pet sounds)
(8) sad eyes (the one that goes: looks like it's over / you knew i
couldn't stay... / Saaaaad Eyes turn the other way / i don't wanna see
you cry...)
(9) theme from 'valley of the dolls' (andre and dory previn)
(10) god give me strength (bacharach/costello)
(11) la-la-la-la means i love you (motown)

plus dozens more, including rockers which i can't think of now, some
listed by ck and bob's "somewhere", and of course i'll change my mind in
the next five minutes, etc., etc.

Five . . . Five, ya say? OK. Five. Ouch, ouch, ouch! Wasn't the
original list 10 songs long? Sigh . . .

I'll try, but I may not make it. Here ya go. And, yes, Ricky, they
change, except for my first two.

1) Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye -- Cole Porter (Ella slays me with her
rendition. When she sings: "When you're near there's such an air of
spring about it/I can hear a lark somewhere begin to sing about
it/There's no love song finer but how strange the change from major to
minor/Ev'ry time we say goodbye." i fall to pieces. oh! i am falling
to pieces just hearing it again!)

2) My Funny Valentine -- Rodgers and Hart (Carmen McRae's version is
killer and is also my favorite)

3) Hejira -- Joni Mitchell (this one says everything she always says,
except it's all said in one place and she's never said these things
better, or is that less bitter?)

4) What's Goin' On -- Marvin Gaye (just listen. even cyndi lauper
failed to screw this up, the song is just that good)

5) As -- Stevie Wonder (my favorite record by Stevie is Golden Lady,
but this is a better song. Someone tells you to listen to this one?
You know they all fucked up for ya, child. Sing it, Stevie, sing it!
I'll be loving this until the trees and sea just up and fly away, until
8x8x8 is 4)

Ding!!! Ding!!!! Ding!!!! That's it, moderator, you can sit down now.

But, but, but . . .
what about "Blue Skies" by Berlin as done by Dinah Washington or
Cassandra Wilson? What about about my Gershwins, for god's sake!?!
Like Nancy Wilson doing "Someone to Watch Over Me," or "They Can't Take
That Away From Me" by anyone but Cybill Shepard? And hell, we haven't
even talked about Bachrach and David! What about "the Look of Love?"

Ding!! Ding!!! Dingggggg!!!!!!!!! You cheat, Mary. Sit down!

This is soooooo unfair!

Mary-- I was going to pick "Hejira" instead of "A Case of You." I'm
glad you picked it. The lyrics to "Hejira" say more than most films or
novels do.

"I'm porous with travel fever
But you know I'm so glad to be on my own
Still somehow the slightest touch of a stranger
Can set up trembling in my bones
I know - no one's going to show me everything
We all come and go unknown
Each so deep and superficial
Between the forceps and the stone..."

Great choice!

Well, guys...
I think I agree with Mary, there are so many we just love, but...
It's hard, but I'll try:
(not in that order)"All In Love Is Fair", by the author; "In Your
Eyes", sung by George Benson; "One Hello", sung by Randy
Crawford; "Hello, Old Friend", James Taylor; and "True", by Spandau
Ballet.
Now, please, forgive my shallowness in the choice, but there are so
many left behind that I think that's just a list of some that I love,
not my favorites...

Bye for now!
