I just applied the SP1 to all the remotes, workgroup, admin. It was a
big upgrade this time. Even bigger then the 3.0 to 4.0.2.1 upgrade.
Yep, we upgraded our Oracle platform to 8.1.6. Along with that we had
to update all the Oracle Client software for the workgroup users. Well
it's Monday and everything seems to be tippy top shape, I suppose! I
have a problem with this new SP1 release. Before you upgrade take a
screen shot of your before and after of the Admin-DB Manager. Before
you upgrade and after. Then compare. What the heck are they doing out
west? I've noticed about 10-15 new tables in the DB and all of them
are related to SupportLogix. We don't have SupportLogix. Then I went
and took a closer look at the bundle and here is what it reads.

Schema changes to convert 4.0 SalesLogix database to the combined
Sales/Support schema.

I guess this will make Interacts job allot more easier. LAZY ASSES
! I hate this about the computer industry. They’ll revamp
your entire system with one little patch. We don’t even have nor want
anything to do with SupportLogix. Interact need to get off there award
winning high horse and quit begin so LAZY. It’s pure laziness! I read
the entire document on how to Apply Service Pack 1 for SalesLogix for
Sales and it said nothing about these changes. Sorry but I’m ver
irritated here!

Take care,

Corey

I am not all that big on defending these guys too much, but I am in the
SalesLogix corner on this one.
SalesLogix did not write SupportLogix, they bought it.
Until this version of SalesLogix / SupportLogix they did not really
have integration between the two products.
They use a different interface, and used different databases.

Now, they have attempted to do justice to both products by completely
integrating the two databases into one.
Here are the disadvantages:
If you don't use SupportLogix, you have a big chunk of empty schema.
If you don't use SalesLogix, you have an even bigger chunk of empty
schema.
Here are the advantages:
If you use both, you have one database to maintain.
If you use both, the calls between the systems go to a sigle database
(they are faster).
If you use both, the data from your support system is completely
integrated into your sales system so your sales guys and support guys
can see what the others are doing (very important)
If you use both, the system resources and disk space overhead is
minimized by having everything in one database.

So, they went in the direction that benefited the majority of their
current clients and new clients - put everything in one database.
They made the right decision from a marketing standpoint, and although
they are not the best database programmers or the most intelligent
sales people, they are great at marketing and that has certainly
carried the company a long way.

The work they did to combine the systems was not through laziness in
any way (think about it, they rewrote the entire SupportLogix
application to communicate with a schema that does not match the
original).
They did this to try to make it more beneficial to have noth products.
Sure SupportLogix still sucks, but it took them 3 and a half years to
make SalesLogix resemble a CRM, so it is going to take time to make a
good support product.

These were not all of the changes either (take a look at how keys are
generated now - still a dumb system, but no more key file on the
client).
They have made some improvements, so don'e rule the entire service pack
out.
Besides, any future builds will be off the new schema, so get used to
it now.

Keep in mind that you do not represent their ideal client (and I
certainly don't - they hate my company) so decisions that seem dumb to
you are most likely to support the majority of their clients and the
plans they have for new ones.
Us old SOB's that use nothing but their CRM are no longer their prime
target.

You’re very right!

We've had SalesLogix since one of the first versions (I still have the
original CD too). Definitely allot of changes were to come for the
future of this product. I read an article that said they picked up New
Horizons as a client. That is allot of money for them. I do realize
the importance of bigger clients but who helped them build the
business? Company's like mine! Now that they're big time. They have
forgotten their roots just like any big company. Typical Corporate
America for ya.

I could care less about what they do with SupportLogix! I just don’t
what the empty tables in my DB. I know it's not hurting anything but
still! It’s freckin disrespectful.

It's all about the $$$ to this little train that could (Interact).

That’s what I'm fired up about!

So you work for a company not interested in money?

I believe in the "program for the 90%" that the larger companies seem
to follow.
Microsoft is willing to screw a few people (or a lot if it suits them)
to make the bigger pile of cash, and SalesLogix just follows the model.

I agree that it sucks to be one of the companies that helped them build
what they have (me being their 41st customer), but hey - if it wasn't
for companies going for the bigger pile of cash, we would all be
running on a UNIX platform (without Oracle because they certainly
program for the money).

However, none of this makes much difference to me because I have
decided to blow this popsicle stand...
A little programming for the 90% for myself - I am about 90% insane
from this place and the last sane 10% found me a new job.
My last day here is Friday, and I am going to a company that uses
nothing but MS SQL and in house Visual Basic applications for their CRM!

Anyone want a job at a software company in Waterbury CT?
I am leaving a gaping hole of a job opportunity...if you have
SalesLogix experience you could probably start in the $80k range here...

Congratulations to you!

I'm interested in the JOB. I'll even move if I have to.

I'm working for a Financial company that’s going no where fast. Not
much job security. Everyone around here is worried.

What part of the world do you live in?

Send me your email and I'll reply with my resume.

Thanks,

Corey
