Hello,
I'd like to visit Sweden this summer, but I'm not sure where to go, what
to visit, etc. Are there any Sweden vacation packages anyone knows
about?
Thanks.

Hallå,

We are also planning our Swedish vacation, but in June 2001. First we
are planning to see Stockholm. It is one of the most beautiful cities in
Europe. While there we plan to see the VASA museum. Its centered around
the pride of the Swedish fleet, the ship VASA that sank.Plus there is
much more to see at the museum. Also planning to take a tour of the
National palace. It is huge, beautiful and has many idems to see about
Swedish history.

Also stopping off near Gothenborg to see friends. We plan to take the
kids to a huge amusement part near Gothenborg. It is a nice city.It has
an old and new section that are both really interesting.Ive been to
Gothenborg before and had a great time.

Also planning on having someone teach me some nyckelharpa (Sweden's
national instrument) music techniques at Tobo, Sweden at the Eric
Sahlström Institute, and visit the nyckelharpa festival in
Österbybruk. If you are into Swedish traditional folk music the Uppland
region of Sweden is where to go.

We also want to tour the nice little resort city of Östhammer. Also want
to visit friends and see the country side farther north in Sweden near
Umeå and Luleå.

Sweden is a very rich and beautiful country with so much to see. There
are so many beautiful cities, towns and villages to see and the people
are very nice and helpful. Also the country is rich in nature and there
are so many beautiful outside sites to see.

One small word of advice. I have found that many Swedes are proud of
the area of Sweden they live in and do like it when vacationers show
interest in their area. Most everyone can speak English to some degree
but the Swedes I have met liked it when I tried to speak Svenska, if
even a few words. When in their area of Sweden show some genuine
interest in their area and don't dwell on other areas of Sweden too
much and the locals will warmly open up to you in a short period of
time.

Enjoy your vacation in Sweden. I'm sure we will enjoy ours.
Tack så mycket for the post. Thomas

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I don't know a word of Swedish, but
would be interested in learning. I wonder if there are any beginner
Swedish langugage courses in my area (Detroit area, Michigan, US). I
haven't seen many Swedes here, just people who come on business from
Volvo, and a few exchange students. :) I guess I'll have to check with
my travel agent regarding vacation packages.

Based on what you said and what I've heard/read before, it sounds like
there's competition between residents of different areas. Any
particular reason for this, or is it just loyalty to their birthplace?

Try going to your local library and take out a Swedish
conversation/travel cassette tape.
I'm using Language/30 Svenska Swedish cassette tapes by Educational
services Corp as I drive back and forth to work. I'm using Transparent
>Language CDs on the computer. Also listening to Radio Sweden in Svenska
even though I only understand less than 10% of what is said. Also we
are hosting a Swedish girl exchange student in August for the school
year and we email twice a week and she helps correct my Svenska. Also
there are a number of basic Svenska courses on the internet.Try a
varity of these approaches. Whatever works best for you.

The idea is you don't have to be good at Swedish on vacation in Sweden
to have a great time.Just the effort to say a few key words to the
locals will help open the up to you. Best words are Tack så mycket
(Thank you very much).

I have noticed that the local Swedes are usually a little reserved at
first to vacationers but open up a little when you try to talk to them
in their language. Also I have found most Swedes are very polite
people
but tend to crystalize their exact meaning of things when they speak.
They asked me exact sentances and like when I tried to give them an
exact answer without non needed add ons.

Also they like when you are on time to an appointment especially if you
are invited to someone's house.Bring the woman of the house some
flowers and the kids some sweets. Also if you are staying for dinner
dont eat anything untill the host/hostess gives a toast. Always tell
the host/hostess thank you for a wonderful meal and you had a great
time. The Swedes I met were a very polite and gratious people.

No its not so much competion but rather pride in their birthplace and
area of Sweden they live in. One must remember Sweden in recent times
has not been attacked by a major world power or had to fight with large
amounts of troops in a major war.(They are a neutral country which I
think is fantastic). Also some people like my grandparents (especially
on my grandfather side) had familty units that lived for almost a
hundred years in a small section of Sweden. Some times one can find a
list of relatives in a parish, town or village that go back two hundred
years.Sweden is a much older country than the US.This may partially
explain their pride in their birth areas and places where they live
verses to have SUPER patriotism to the country.(Only an opinion)

I have found Swedes love their country but sometimes will vigorously
debate good and bad points about their country between themselves but
DONOT like it when foreigners or vacationers bring up the subject. Its
best not to dwell on certain problems of Sweden with locals but
converse about the good things.

These are only my opinions and observations.I am not a Swedish scholor.
I just love the country and its people. My wife and I plan to retire
5months/year in Sweden in about 12 years.

This has been an enjoyable post. It would be nice for others to post
their vacationing experiences in Sweden so we can get other ideas and
opinions.Maybe get George Woods to say a few words on the subject.

Good luck and enjoy your vacation. Tom
