Hi,

I listened with interest to the story on men being more dangerous to the
environment than women. But I'm wondering if they considered a couple of
factors?

Is this just a reflection of the role of women in society? If women had jobs
like men, wouldn't they drive cars and pollute just as much?

And no one asked the obvious question, why is this so?

Hi Daniel,

I'm not so sure a more equal status for women would make them as polluting as
men seem to be. Sweden (and neighboring Norway) are about the most equal
societies in the world. I would think that the differences would only be
larger in other countries.

On the other hand, public transportation is more developed here, while car
ownership is more of an elite thing. In a country like the United States,
women are much more likely to have access to a car than here, and less likely
to use public transportation, perhaps. That might mean women there have a
chance to pollute more.

I don't know if the woman we interviewed did a comparative study (I doubt it).
But I can ask our reporter Azariah Kiros if he knows.

Thanks for writing,
