Bike for Mumia
Join the Justice for Mumia! contingent in the
Bike New York 5 Boro Bike Tour
Sunday, May 7th, 8 AM (we'll meet 7:30 AM--see details below)

Tour dramatic views of New York's glorious skyline as we cycle over
bridges, along waterfronts, onto highways, into neighborhoods & business
districts and through parks on a leisurely-paced 42 mile tour...while
bringing the message for Justice for Mumia! to the 30,000 other cyclists
participating in the event.

Take a stand on justice, spread the word demanding a new trial for Mumi
a
Abu-Jamal, and ride with us at the 5 Borough Bike Tour. Mumia Abu-Jamal is
an award winning journalist on death row in Pennsylvania. His case
concentrates some of the most critical issues confronting us: efforts to
marginalize dissent, silence protest, criminalize resistance, police
brutality, the injustices in the "criminal justice" system, and the racist
use of the death penalty. There is overwhelming evidence that his 1982
trial was unfair--human rights organizations, labor unions, religious
leaders and congregations, students, activists, and prominent public figures
such as writers, musicians, actors have become increasingly visible in
stopping his execution and demanding a new trial. (If you want to learn
more about his case there are excellent resources available, including the
video shown on HBO, "Mumia Abu-Jamal, A Case of Reasonable Doubt", a recent
Amnesty International report, and the website: www.mumia.org and
www.jformumia.org) His case is at a critical stage in the courts and we,
as bicyclists and people of conscience, have decided to ride together this
year to demand justice for Mumia.

Pulling off a bike tour of this scale is a huge effort and the organize
rs
deserve our cooperation. We encourage folks to pre-register now for the
tour. (Registrations forms are available on the their web site:
www.bikenewyork.com. We understand that it will be difficult, if not
impossible, to register on the spot that morning.)

Wear your Mumia tee-shirts, make signs and streamers for your bikes &
stickers for your bike helmets--with the messages demanding justice for
Mumia. There will be picnic & rest-stop areas along the way, where snacks
will be provided, but bring a lunch, water and plenty of Mumia flyers!

To find each other in this sea of bicyclists and assemble for the Mumia

contingent, we will meet at 7:30 AM in the plaza on the west side of
Broadway, between Liberty and Cedar Streets, just a few blocks south of
Fulton Street, in lower Manhattan (take the 2, 3, 4, 5 to Fulton Street, A
or C trains to the Broadway /Nassau, N and R to Cortland St.) The ride
begins at 8 AM at Battery Park.

The tour starts in lower Manhattan and passes through the Bronx, Queens
,
and Brooklyn before ending in Staten Island. Ride for as long (or as
short) a time as you wantjust be there! Don't worry if you're not a fast
cyclist -- most of us are not either. It will be a great day and many new
people will be reached with word about Mumia!

We expect those doing the entire ride to arrive at the end point betwee
n 2
and 4 PM. Just in time to head right over (or leave the ride a little
early) to Madison Square Garden to be part of the very special Day for
Mumia: with Ossie Davis, Susan Sarandon, Rage Against the Machine, Alice
Walker, Indigo Girls, Johnnie Cochran (and thousands more!) For
information on the Madison Square Garden event call 212/633-6646.
