PLEASE GET THIS OUT TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
Dear Friends, Family and Colleagues,
You may have heard about the
American Federation of Television and Radio Artists
and
Screen Actors Guild
strike
against many television commercial producers.
The public generally is not aware of what this is all about, so this
will be interesting to everyone that you forward this to.
Altho it is said that the strike is against advertisers, it is really
against MANUFACTURES. After all almost all of the advertisers are
really manufacturers of product, E.G.: Coke, Tide, Crest, Ivory Soap
etc. The advertisers (manufactures) pay big bucks to the television
stations, so the TV news department are not inclined to give the strike
any attention.
What they, the advertisers have tried to do is lower the money we get
to appear in commercials or say things like in the case of the
internet, that AFTRA/SAG should not have jurisdiction over commercials
because ... well, because it is the internet.
What the public is usually not aware is that while we have a commercial
running, let us say for Coke, we can NOT accept work from a competitor
such as Pepsi or maybe even milk or bottled water. Last year Ray did a
NYS Lottery commercial. Wile it was running Ray could not do a
commercial for any "gaming" venture that might be considered
competition. Maybe not even for an airline promoting flights to Las
Vegas or any other destination mentioning gaming.
While the commercials are running, the actors get residuals to
compensate for not being able to accept other work in that area.
The advertisers (manufacturers) tried to get our residuals taken away
and STILL prevent us from working for competitors, no matter HOW LONG
the original commercial ran.
The biggest stumbling block to a contract agreement between SAG/AFTRA
and the advertisers is the intransigence of Procter & Gamble, a company
who has benefited the most from advertising over the years.
SAG/AFTRA announced a nation-wide boycott of three of P&G's long list
of products: Tide Detergent, Ivory Soap and Crest Toothpaste. A
substitute for each of these products, equal to, or surpassing in
quality, can be found in any market in the nation.
Please DO NOT BUY:
CREST Toothpaste
TIDE Laundry Detergent
IVORY Soap
