NYCHA Tenants Rabid about New Dog Policy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-by Raymond B. Normandeau
Queensbridge Houses is the largest public housing project in North
America and as far as the tenants are concerned "There are enough
bitches around Queensbridge Houses as it is".
Noisy, smelly, urine in the elevators, biting and scratching? It may
get worse before it gets any better. What is behind these sentiments is
the lifting of the ban against dogs in New York City Housing Authority
developments.
Tenants are saying:
"When we moved in, our lease said no dogs"
"Dogs run around without leashes already"
"How come our opinions were never solicited"
"There is always dog poop on sidewalks with no law enforcement"
"The only dogs allowed should be working dogs for the disabled"
"When I was with the ambulance Corps, we used to have cases of children
bitten"
"As people throw out dogs that get too big, other residents will shoot
some of those dogs"
Lawyer Karen Copeland, who specializes in pet and housing cases, cheers
the end of the NYCHA ban on dogs. She said "Hopefully, we will be
linking up shelter animals with people in city housing."
Queensbridge Tenant Council Press Secretary Ray Normandeau asks; "How
many dogs has she adopted?"
Maybe next, NYCHA will offer loans for the home based business of the
breeding and training of Pit Bulls and Rottweilers. NYCHA has a
toll-free dog-complaint hot line, (888) 895-DOGS or
1-888-895-3647.
When we called them on August 9 to complain about dog urine in the
elevator of 41-04 Vernon Boulevard, those NYCHA employees had never
even heard about the lifting of the ban.
