I was in Chicago last weekend - in the front window of the RL store is a
HUGE polo display -
saddle, mallett, hay bales, boots....the works...
The ONLY silver lining I can see is that maybe it will spark more of an
interest in the sport???
(I know...I'm grasping at straws)....

Yeah I saw the spot. Really sealed my belief that I will never again buy
anything with the
man's name attached. My immediate thought was...if "polo" can't use
fashion, he should not
be allowed to use the sport. I'd love to know where his ad agency got
the footage and how
much they paid for the usage.

Just have to think of the positive....any publicity is good publicity.

So at the very least, it will stir the spirit in a few meek souls to get
out there and play the
game.

POLOPONY - I don't think it's possible to portray polo as more snobby
than it is right now. As
long as ppl charge so much for lessons, horses, equipment etc...it's
going to remain the
snobbiest of all sport. At the current prices, it will never reach the
masses coz only rich folks
with money to burn can afford to learn to play the game. (unless of
course you were
fortunate enought to be born on a farm) !!

To answer "spotdog's" question below, the footage (at least part of it)
looked like Bennie
Gutierrez. Which would actually be old footage which may have been
touched up a little.
From what I have been told Lauren wanted footage of the perfect polo
form when hitting, to
base his now famous insignia (the little polo guy on the shirt).
I was told that Gutierrez received 800 dollars for the rights to the
footage. And received no
money from RL for many years.
I just saw the commercial for the first time tonight. To me it was
sickening to see someone
(RL) arrogant enough to exploit the sport for nothing more than to
inflate his ego, as the ad
itself did not have much to do with the products he sells.
For years people have paid extra money for the "Polo" insignia.
Guttierez, is why the insignia
is the insignia and should have received much more for this contribution
to RL's product
which bares OUR sports namesake.
