Before you buy.
There are 256 Odu, an Odu is made up of a combination of
8 characters (either facing up or down). For you computer buffs,
think of it as a "Byte" (bits are either ON or OFF) and this
forms a letter (Odu).
With the Obi you can't really make out what the Odu is because
you only see half of it. However, you can still get a lot of
information from the Obi if you're patient and learn to recognize
its subtle messages.
Blessings!... Fajuitan :-)
My Epega book has brief descriptions of the 16 "base Odus" in the back
(all of the combinations possible with four Obi, looking just at whether
or not they're lying face up or face down, without taking into account
whether the Obi are male or female). And when I had the one-hour class
with Phil's daughter at the Foundation's three-day workshop in Sept. of
'97, I had written in my notes that you read the Obi (for the purpose of
Odus) from top to bottom. Now, whether or not she actually said that,
or whether it got into my notes incorrectly, I'm not sure. I made the
unfortunate mistake of not transcribing my notes immediately, and by the
time I got around to it, some of the details of the experience had been
lost.
But, based on my notes, I look at them from top to bottom, and however
they are arranged, I get something like this:
Open
Closed
Open
Open
And I read this "Odu" accordingly. If the Epega description is not as
much as I need (since it is, after all, a very brief introduction rather
than an in depth discussion of each Odu), I usually look at the
corresponding "meji" (twin) Odu in the Epega/Neimark 256 Odu book (which
is also available through the Foundation's spiritual store). I read the
appropriate passage always keeping in mind that an Odu Meji is not
really the same thing as the "Odu" from the Obi. (See Phil's thing in
the Classroom section of the Foundation Website about "not trying to fly
a Cessna using the instruction manual for a helicopter", or words to
that effect.) I would imagine that this is what Fajuitan means when he
says that you can't really read the full Odu, because you can only see
half of it. But I think that the general energy trend is similar, since
the Obi Odus I believe were the foundation for the 16 "Odu mayores" (I'm
not sure what the technical term for that is in English - sorry!), and
then the technique developed into the double Odus that are used today.
I'm not sure where I read that, but I remember it from somewhere. So I
think that the general energy trend is similar, as long as you keep in
mind that it's not going to be exactly the same thing.
It would be interesting to hear what someone with more experience has to
say about it all... Fajuitan? You're so patient to help us!! :-)
Blessings,
Ellen

Thanks Ellen :-) I believe that what Afolabi Epega was saying
in his book is that there are 16 possible combinations you
can get with the Obi, the 16 combinations form a basis for
the energy at play and it give you another dimention to the
reading. What's comfusing is that its not really an Odu,
but a part of one.
There are 256 Odus, an Odu has 2 sides, with 4 positions on
each side. A "Meji" indicates that both sides of the Odu
are identical. This is significant because it indicates that
the energy is the same on both the spiritual world and the
material/everyday world. Out of the 256 Odu, there are 16 Meji.
These 16 Odu Meji is not the same as what you would get with
the Obi, but they do give you a hint to the underlying energy
at play as Ellen pointed out. I put together a list of hints
(keywords) below to help you understand what the Obi is saying
to you about the energy at play. As you get more experience
with the Obi, be sure to add to your list of hints/keywords.
A good practice is to look back at your readings to see how
accurate your interpretation was, not only is a positive
re-inforcement but it will help you fine-tune your skills.
The meaning of your cast will vary greatly depending if you're
in "Ire" (good fortune) or "Ebe" (bad fortune). Your cast will
determine that. Good fortune really means that you are
"on path" towards achieving your destiny both spiritually
and in life. Bad Fortune really means you're heading in
the wrong direction and you need to take some action to
get back "on your path".
note: The cast is read from top to bottom. For example "Iwori":
