Before you buy.
Hi Ray,
Alafia!
I see that no one else has posted a response to your question. I
remember reading somewhere that, at the "dawn of time", so to speak, the
only divination method known to the practitioners of Ifa was the Obi.
And from this ancient knowledge, the "modern" methods of Opele and Ikin
developed. (I say "modern" because these methods are themselves many
thousands of years old.) And somehow, meridillogun also developed,
although the source I read was less clear about the interplay between
Meridillogun and the other systems. Unfortunately, I can not remember
where I read this about the Obi. So I am very sorry to say I can't
point you to the source.
But if that source was acurate, it would make sense that the Oricha were
each linked first to an Obi "odu", and then as the method developed in
complexity, the Oricha's relationships with the full Odus also became
more complex. And since Ifa tends to be a very logical system, it makes
sense that this would be true. However, it all rests on the original
premise that I read about the Obi, and which may or may not be accurate.
I will try to remember where I read it, but short of that I'm afraid I
won't be of any more help on this issue.
Good luck in your search!
Ellen
