Saw this in the other thread. What's the deal with using Toshiba 6GB8
and replace EL34 in M9. Has anyone tried it? Will it work with M8B?

Why not, Toshiba has 2 very famous tube which are rated equal to
western products after the WWII. Toshiba 7189 and 6GB8. To me, 6GB8
look like a small EL156.
Speaking about EL156, I was outbid suddenly on last minute for a quad
from a fat boy. However that quad has never been taken from the self
when I visiting his shop. TFK EL-156 was praised better than GEC KT88.

To my knowledge, Toshiba 7189/EL84 is not any cheaper than the most
expensive NOS European EL84 but not necessarily better.

So have you try replacing EL34 with this 6GB8 before? Can TFK EL156 also
work in a M9/M8b?

That is most certainly a popular tube among collector. >HK$2.5k each in
shops around town. There seem to have different versions of this tube
with different plate material/structure. Any information on this?

Is 6GB8 a direct substitute for EL34? How expensive is it? Can it
beat NOS EL34?

I doubt it. It is likely to be a similar but not equivalent tube like
KT66, which is, according to our friends in Israel, the absolute best
tube in Marantz 8B. None of us in HK dare to try this yet. Maybe you
should.

Latest I heard is that this tube is not cheap. >US$50 each.

According to the author, the 6GB8 is better than even Mullard Type 2
"Big brown feet".

OK. For all I know, the 6GB8 is a diret replacement for the 8417.
I will verify it this evening.

Hi,

I have a chance to listen a M9 with 6GB8 around a year ago in my friend
house. It can work & sound fine to me. My friend told me that it was
better than all the EL34 tubes( no Mullard, Amperex & tele.) on his
hand.

Maybe we should has a samll listening test on 6BG8 VS EL34. I have good
used condition( old version) 6GB8 for collection. So, if someone in here
like to have a listening test. Please let me know. Tim, I guess you
maybe interested.

I am indeed most keen. But do you think it will work in a self-bias
EL34 circuit? I think all my EL34 amp have self-bias circuit.

Is the tube should read 6GB8? My friend had lent me 4 Old 'Toshiba for
Hi Fi' rusty black plate, 3 getter rings version. I had put them in
Sterling (borrow from Doctorjoin) and it sound good. If an audition
party is held, my frient could bring the tubes for audition.

Many people come out and I learn more about 6GB8. Ousluk at Mongkok
always have good Toshiba UOS at cheap price.

TFK EL156 has special 12 Pins base cannot be substitude and it uses
much more filament current.

I think it will be a very good tube for WaiLee type SE/UL over KT88
variants.

Holy malone! I am glad my Sterling survived! :-)

Is the 6GB8 sound better than Mullard type 2 or Amperex double-D in the
Sterling?

How do you set bias on 6GB8?

Can somebody scan the article from "Audiophile" and post it?

The article was actually about a DIY 6L6 SE amp project but with the
remark about using Toshiba 6GB8 on M9 to replace EL34 and getting good
sound. There is no more information from the article.

But I understand the author is actually a friend of Andy Law. Is that
correct, Andy? Would that be the same guy that Wilson know? That cannot
be so many people trying crazy thing like putting 8417-compatible into
M9.

Maybe using GEC KT66 in M8b is safer and something you should try first.

I just have a brief audition. Sound slightly different to Mullard type 2 and
Amperex double D getters. The tonal balance is good. I prefer to let you and
doctorjoin to find out more. My friend had handed a set of five 6GB8 to me
for lending to Doctorjoin for a test audition.

Yes. I am glad too. No smoke nor burning smelt from the Sterling. My
friend reiterated that it could be used as direct plug-in for EL34 and
he had used them before.

No. I do not know the author.

Useful info from Uncle Ned. Now who want to try 8417 on M9. It must be
you, John. Your favourite tube, right?

So is it 8417 or 6GB8 that should you should use to replace EL34??

I would NEVER try that myself. KT66 or even KT88 maybe closer.

That's simple. You may use a varible resistor the tilt down from high
value. With a DMM in series on plate. Adjust plate current value
according to 6GB8 respective working condition.

If you're going to replace EL34. Compare their neg bias point and
adjust driver stage P-P voltage. Sound is absolutly not good without
doing this job if e.g. EL34 neg bias greater than 6GB8.

Becareful on substitution.
