Trying to pick ten albums out of all those I love is a punishment! So
to start with, I have left out jazz and classical. I have also left
out all the Bealtes albums which are, by far, my all-time favourites.
After all these, and then reluctantly cutting out many, many others,
here is my list of ten favorite pop/rock albums (an all LP list):
1. Running on Empty - Jackson Browne
A one-of-a-kind live album, with stage and rehearsal tracks recorded in
the hotel room, on the bus, backstage, front stage. Highlights are the
title track, “Rosie”, “The Road” (plus “Stay”). Watch out for “Nothing
But Time” (recorded on a bus), the low-frequency hum you hear is not
feedback picked up by your cartridge, but the roar of the bus engine!
The best part of it all is that this wondeful album of great music can
be found easily, for almost nothing.
2. Stop Making Sense - Talking Head
Incredible live album with seemingly endless energy from David Byrne
and company. And the sound is great. Just listening to “Psycho
Killer” alone is worth it. Buy the UK EMI pressing.
3. Miles of Aisles - Joni Mitchell
Yes - yet another live album (I love the atmosphere of live albums!)
Of all the versions of “The Circle Game” recorded by Joni, in my
opinion, the one here is the best. Period.
4. Green House – Leo Kottke
The “King of 12-string” (guitar) picking, strumming and singing. Some
people does not like his singing but I love it. And the sound is of
audiophile quality. Try to look for the original Capitol US pressing
rather than the German pressing.
5. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars –
David Bowie
Hunt for the EMI Centennial re-issue LP that was out a few years ago –
a pressing better than the original! My favourite track is “Starman”.
6. Simple Dreams – Linda Rondstadt
Commercial but great! I have four pressings of this record. From the
worst to the best, they are: Japanese Pioneer-Warner pressing, original
regular US pressing, white label US test pressing and Nautilus
SuperDisc pressing. The last one is simply amazing, winning the white
label test pressing by a big margin.
7. Summer Breeze – Seals & Crofts
Still sounds as good today as when it won the Grammy Award some 30
years ago! Listen to the perfect harmony of the duo on “Funny Little
Man” “Humming Bird”, and “The Boy Down the Road”. Seals & Crofts are a
singing duo second to none, rivalling Lennon & McCartney, Don & Phil
Everely and Simon & Garfunkel.
8. Mud Slide Slim & the Blue Horizon- James Taylor
The playing of the acoustic guitar on this album by JT is one which
every acoustic guitar player (including yours truly) wishes he had
recorded! The songs are wonderful: “You’ve Got A Friend”, “You Can
Close Your Eyes” “Long Ago and Far Away (with Joni Mitchell). Try
listen to “Isn’t it Nice to Be Home Again” with lights off -- something
magical will happen, I promise! The original pressing is the one with
the dark green (WB shield logo) label. The ones with the “Burbank tree
avenue label” are later pressings.
9. Who’s Next – The Who
Agree with Michael Fremer that the MCA re-issue on 200gm vinyl is the
best pressing. Just go buy it and listen to “Behind Blue Eyes”
and “Won’t Get Fooled Again”. If you do not like the album, I will
personally give you a refund.
10. Hearts & Bones – Paul Simon
Paul Simon’s masterpiece, in my opinion. Can be bought at perhaps
HK$20 at almost any second-hand Lp shop! Excellent music and lyrics,
and as an added bonus, audiophile quality sound! Listen to the
lighting-fast electric guitar solo by Al DiMeola on track
one,“Allergy”. If what comes out of your speakers does not sound
great, sorry pal – throw your system out of the window! (But keep the
record.)
Wish I might list another 10!

My Perlman (EMI) Paganini/Carmen Fantasy is a Japanese version, does it
sound better or not?
I have three Beecham/ Scheherazade but two are the same with ASD XXXX
and only one with different code. Are they all the same? It seems the
one with different code sounds better.

My Perlman Paganini is a box set, don't know which version is better,
but I don't care if it already sound good :)
My Scheherazade is a EMI reissue only!
