Furry news about upcoming conventions, size, weather, etc. might be

Hmm. Well, High Fidelity is still running in my brain, here's a Top Five
list in no particular order.
(Note, Re: High Fidelity: I loved the film. Normally this is the part
where I urge people to find where it's playing and go see it. But, I did
that this Friday and 3 out of 3 of my friends hated the film. :( )
(1) Con Reports: I have to admit, I love reading con reports. I can't
attend most conventions, epecially the West Coast ones, for monetary
reasons. Yes, if it comes down to going to a con and buying a new
battery for my laptop or a SCSI CD-R/W for my babies, guess who wins. :)
So, I love hearing about the cons. But, a.f.f has become a very
unfriendly environment for posting opinions. Most con reports are brief
and sketchy or long and inflammetory. Hopefully, in this group, people
can be detailed and honest without worrying about flames.
(2) News Updates: If you hear about something new and neat, post it!
Take this for example: Dark Horse has offered again the Usagi Yojimbo
collection _Grasscutter_. Stan got an Eisner for this storyline and the
first printing sold out. It's been very hard to find so, if you are
looking to complete your UY collection, here's your chance.
(3) Recommendations and Reviews: If you've found a neat site or novel or
TV program, let us know and please explain why. It can be really
detailed or something as brief as "The Sci-Fi channel's new show,
Exposure, is surprisingly good. It's probably one of the few national
showcases for short films still around and there's a lot of talent on
display there, IMHO."
(4) Topical Discussions: Small groups have their advantages. You can
bring up thorny topics and have a reasonable assurance that they won't
draw hordes of flamers or degenerate into insult-hurling contests. So,
we can talk about the article that was just published about CF 11
without wearing Nomex.
(5) Personal Feelings: Ok, sometimes everyone needs to vent about
something. And while talking to the walls or your stuffed fox may help,
it's always nice to know there's another person listening. People should
feel free to say, "I need to get this off my chest." Who knows, maybe
someone here can help with that particular problem?
Well, those are my suggestions.

It doesn't matter to me, I tend to read whatever pops up here when there
are new messages.
If you're looking for suggestions, though: There's a writing forum I was
watching a while ago, where the moderator would pick five random words
each day and folks could write stories that included those five words.
They were basically writing exercises, and there were dozens of little
micro-stories to read as a result. Some of them were pretty good.

In general I'd like to see that, too... which is why I want to acquire a
laptop so I can write things down while they're still fresh. :3

That's my big reason for having this area, actually... I know that if
I'm moderating it, the bias will be towards personal responsibility and
freedom of expression, rather than avoiding stepping on political toes.
;3
By the way... what article? The one Jimmy Chin found and posted to the
newsgroups that mentioned such sadly-memorable things as Plush-She (the
girl with the skunk tail and bondage gear) and the Fursuit Dance?

Again, this is a primary reason for setting up this area... if Xydexx
wants to put up his podium and rant about all the anti-balloon furs who
are trying to pop his fun, I say go for it. If you want to complain in
details about the dicotomy between illustrators and writers in how they
are treated by furfen, please be my guest.
Hmmm... perhaps I should create a 'Soap Box' forum just for such rants?
Does anyone think that would be a good idea? :3

I think it would be a great idea:) Debating on AFF is pointless due to
the flames and personal attacks...we could rant here without
encountering such.

Okay, there's at least one vote. If someone seconds the motion, I'll
create the newsgroup. ;3
Yeah, laptops are your friend. :) I took mine to Katsucon and I'll
certainly be taking it to AC.

I know yout end to select people who put IMHO's on their statements and
mean it. :)

Yep, I think that's the one. It also featured an artist describing how
he picks up the ladies with a drawing or two and several quotes stolen
from people's web sites.

Thanks. Oh, the header guildines you posted were very helpful. I'll
certainly be using them in the future.

I thought the CF 11 article was pretty one-sided. I'd have given some
suggestions on AFF, but considering AFF's history of not really being
conducive to solving problems, I decided to pass this time.
> Again, this is a primary reason for setting up this area... if Xydexx

Funny you should mention it, I was ranting about that on Fursize just
last night. Someone else had mentioned they were the target of all
sorts of nastiness for having an inflatable character. It was
surprising, because I thought I was the only one who ever got any flak
for it.
I mean, some folks give me flak because they think Xydexx represents *
gasp* linking furry fandom to my fetishes. I think there's something
else that Xydexx represents which is more important: Creative freedom.
The ability to create what one wants without being restricted or
hampered by Someone Else's Guidelines.
It's amazing just how bent out shape some folks get over what is, when
it all comes down to it, a cartoon character.

I'd be quite interested in seeing more con reports, too.

That's the one. But it wasn't Jimmy who posed it. It was me. A friend
of mine found it on the web and passed it along. I also have a
dead tree version of the article.
It could have been worse. The guy could have found out about
Plush-She's little party Sunday after the con. *shudder*
Oh? Are we talking a Disclave "You hung someone from the fire
extinguisher?" type party or something a bit more intense?

Errr, I'm still not sure we're talking about the same report, Dood.... I
got it off a local mailing list with all the headers that said Jimmy
Chin posted the original URL to various newsgroups... but I digress.
The point is that an article was out there, highlighting some
less-than-stellar folks, as usual.

I've been debating whether I should do a NorWesCon report... it isn't a
furry con, but we did have about 60 people show up for our furry room
party...

I don't see why not... furfolk were there, right? :3
