As preparations for Burning Man, I'm making buttons, both as decoration
and as barter.

Here are only a few (not all!) of the designs I'm making

http://www.macrophile.com/ftp/ermine/BurningMan

In about a week, I'm going to take this directory down, so take a look
while you can!

<smile> Ah, a brief temporal event. Much like Burning Man itself. :)
Thanks for letting us take a peak at the buttons. BM2k1-2a, 1-4a, and
BM2K3a are my favorites of the ones featured there; fire, stars and
chakras. :)

Can't wait to hear about this year's event. Hope you can get a lot of
cool pictures while up there! I envy you the opportunity. :)

You're one of the few who's correctly noticed what 3a is... at least,
one of the few who's talked to me about it. ;3

Note, the numbers have a meaning... all the 1's are 1", the 2 is a
2.25", and 3 is a 3". I actually made 4 more 1" designs and another
2.25" design, and I'm making a bunch of keychain fobs using the 2.25"
designs as well as buttons. :3

I'm going to take a risk and bring my SLR with me this year... I don't
have the money to buy a digital camera at the quality level required for
this kind of photography. I doubt the solar flowers will be here again,
but if they are I *definitely* want pictures... and to find out who did
them and send scads of praise. They were the most elegant art
installation out there, both in form and function. Beautiful! :3

I have a feeling they will be noticed at the event itself. While I can't
name all the chakras, I'm certain quite a few attendees will be rattling
them off when they see the button. :)

Ahh. I was curious about the numbering system. And I didn't know the
stamping machine created fobs as well. Sounds like you made a very good
investment there.

Oohh. Trust me, digital cameras are nice, but unless you're Lucasfilm
nothing beats the depth and organic quality of 35mm film. Events like
this, where light plays an important part, are almost made for SLR's.
You can't use long exposure times to create ghostlike figures with a
digital camera...

But I do ramble on. :)

And likely they'll be the ones wanting those buttons, anyways. :3

By The Way, the 'theme' for this year's Burning Man is "THE BODY", which
is why it's titled that on the 3" button... as well as giving me an
excuse what to do with the purple 'spirit' chakra. :3

Oh, and those spheres aren't just chakras... that's the actual layout of
what the central area of the Playa will be like... with the Man being a
mile-long laser sculpture, and the circles will be areas of Art
Installations, each to the theme of that chakra. ;3

Well, to be more precise, there is a kit that uses the button design
(lipped back, shell, mylar cover) and modified the back piece to attach
a chain. Apparently on the Badge-A-Minit system it's really hard to get
the chain attached, but the folks at Dr. Don's found a clever way to
solve that problem.

I like my Chinon... it allows auto-everything-except-focus, or you can
go to full-manual if you want. I plan on bringing several speeds of
film, as I'm *not* into the advantix "one speed fits all" style film.
During the day, there are lots of art installations to be seen, and
during the night, there are various exotic lightshows (fire, dances,
lasers, etc) to explore. The contrasts are pretty dramatic.

If I had any access to hyped film (astrophotography stuff), I'd try
it... of course someday I would also like to get that folding Newtonian
and do some astrophotography while I'm out there... the skies over Black
Rock Desert are breathtaking! :3

> But I do ramble on. :)

*shrug* Hey, I understand... I like photography but don't do nearly as
much of it as I'd like. Partically because I'm concerned the subject
matter would cause problems at the developer (it's happened before,
which is why I want to go back to California with their privacy laws
that *require* development of film regardless of subject matter... you
could always call the cops if you spot child porn or snuff or whatever,
but the film *must* be properly developed!), my normal busy schedule
keeps a lot of my hobbies at bay, and lastly I tend to be on the other
side of the camera. ;3

<laugh> So, it's not only art but a portable map to the event. :) Wish I
had a satelite I could re-task. It'd get some great photos of the area.

Necessity is the mother of invention. People can be very adaptable. Say,
does Dr. Don's have a web page?

<shudder> Oh, gods. I've seen some of the pictures they produce. Under
normal, daylight conditions it's ok but try for anything exotic and you
get grain the size of golf balls. :p

Erf. Gods, I wish I could go... Would that I were not a poor creature.
And the fact I'm moving into a new townhouse, etc. My expenses have shot
through the roof since the beginning of this month...

I can imagine. Virtually no light pollution, clear skies with only the
faintest of cloud covers... <shiver>

Actually, I've found a few mail-in places that assure privacy.
PhotoWorks (http://www.photoworks.com/) has an ECircles like privacy
statement, but I haven't had a chance to test it.

I have, however, tested the development policy of ShootersLab
(http://www.shooterslab.com/Default.htm). They're the only mail-out
place that would develop some nude photos I took of a friend of mine.
Not because they were nudes, but because they were on black and white
film stock. I got my photos back just fine. But, Shooters was a
professional's development lab way before they got on the net, so they
don't have the hang-ups a normal development place would.

my normal busy schedule
> keeps a lot of my hobbies at bay, and lastly I tend to be on the other

Yeah, I don't have time to just go out and shoot these days. Plus, I
don't have my own dark room and I miss the hands-on attention. As for
being in front of the camera...well, the photos I put up on Friends in
Fur should show why I say _behind_ the lens. :)
