Since I couldn't make Anthrocon this year, I went ahead and did a
one-day excursion to AnimeExpo, which is the largest anime con in the
Unites States. Has about 10,000 persons a year and it takes place
somewhere in the L.A./O.C. area the same weekend as Anthrocon.
Naturally, along with the Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon and Pokemon
fans, there's the typical hentai fanboy who's after things like "Wicked
City" and "La Blue Girl."
This year the con was at the Disneyland Hotel.
Ooops...
After a) seeing a bit of "Wicked City" and b) some idiot dealer let a
12-year-old get ahold of some hentai, the hotel clamped down hard enough
on the con to make eyeballs squinch. The video programming was gutted
to the point where even "Ranma 1/2" was out because is showed breasts
and most dealers found their stocks cut in half because they were adult
material.
For a while, folks kept hoping Confurence would go to that hotel. Man,
am I glad they priced themselves out of the running every time. =};-3
[Small anecdote: One of the restaurants at the complex is a buffet
called "Goofy's Kitchen." It costs $24.95 a person for a meal. The
manager said "But you get to have your picture taken with a character."
and I replied "For that much I expect to get a lap dance from Minnie."
Suffice to say, I didn't dine there. =};-3]

Before you buy.
Ahhh...No. Not quite.
This isn't what happened. At least, that's not the whole story.
The anime convention I'm working with has been in contant contact with
Anime Expo since the incident. So this is the report we've recieved and,
at this point, we've no reason to believe AX is decieving us.
First, seeing Wicked City didn't start this off. It was a single dealer
who sold hentai material to an underaged person. At first, he was only
suspected of doing it, so convention officials and hotel personel kept
an eye on him.
The did it again. Three further times, in fact.
Convention officials and the hotel phoned the police. When officers
arrived, they went to the gentleman in question and asked him to pack up
and go.
The dealer immideately went into massive rant and started pointing out
all the other dealers in the room who sold hentai, including one that
had caused trouble before. Many invocations of first Amendment rights
were made, but the plain fact was that he had violated convention rules
and local laws.
After all this happened, AnimeExpo (NOT Disney, NOT the hotel, but the
CONVENTION ITSELF) decided it would be prudent to nip any potential
problems in the bud by pulling their hentai material.
They did it as a CYA measure. Not because jack-booted thugs from the
Disney corporation came in and insisted all the smut be removed. So if
you wish to blame anyone, blame the dealer who sold that kid hentai in
the first place and AnimeExpo's management.
