this months stereophile has a nice quad article, about how quad was
bought out and no longer services the esl-57. a company in germany
bought the panel strechers, updated the electronics with more reliable
components, and has new coatings for the diaphrams. the picture of
diaphrams being stretched is great because there are no less than 12
weights hanging off of each side of the mylar!!! the panels are then
baked in an oven. a pair of referbished "at least as good as new"
quads goes for $3000 usd. they are claiming 10-20 years before a
needed service on the referbs.
