Wow! I have a pair of the four-element JasZen mid/tweeters, built
around 1960, and I believe basically the same panels as in your pair of
two-ways. While on loan to a friend (when I out of town) one of them
started smoking. He got it unplugged and opened fast, and the damage was
restricted to the circuit board components; he thought it was due to a
heavy build-up of dirt on the board. They now sit unused, and I would
really like to get them back in operation if you or the designer can
give me any info on the power-supply components, etc. Another problem
with them was that, after about 20 years, their level of hiss had
escalated when the polarizing power was on, but without signal
connection (or with it). They're 16 ohms by the way -- I've also
wondered what would be required to to convert them to 8 ohms, because
that lost 3dB makes it a lot harder to match them with woofers (without
biamping), although I always managed it one way or another. I'd really
appreciate any help on this! -- Thanks.

I had a problem with the back plates also, it was in the power
supply that feeds the electrostatic driver. I took out the whole DC
side of the speaker and replaced it with a new upgraded ultrasonic
supply that I use in other larger electrostats, but with the voltage
turned down. I have a repair shop for old electrostats called The
Electrostatic Doctor. Though I do not do much with the back plates, I
am more into repairing and updating cores, but I know these speakers
well, if you wish I can repair the backplates for you, and even get a
hold of new drivers also if you needed them, the buzzing is most likely
caused by dust build up in the driver itself try getting a shop vac and
vacuuming the drivers both front and back.
