Hello fellow jacketeers. I have been a (lurker) for sometime but now am
a member. I have a question? Besides the 20 or so companies that made
the government contracted A-2s and related flying jackets. Who made all
those private purchase A-2s and similar jackets? How about those
Australian ones as well. Does anyone know? Seems like there are a lot
of pictures in the books, magazines, and live footage of pilots wearing
private purchase jackets. This has interested me for sometime now.
Thanks.

I sent Marc W. a photo of one such jacket, perhaps he has posted it
somewhere. Are you reading this Marc? It passed thru my hands many
years ago, and had very intersting layered CBI insignia. 375thBs from
memory.

Yes, I do have the photo, but haven't scanned it for posting. No
maker label, though, so it doesn't specifically help Sky Pirate.

I'll try to remember to scan and post the photo sometime soon.

I've seen a commercial A-2, made by Star Sportswear. I have no idea
when it was made (my guess is early forties, to early 50's). It was
very much like the style of their military contract.

This will have to be short, as we are very busy, but we have found one
such jacket in our archives, I think there might well be others, but
there is SO MUCH stuff here, nobody really knows what we have or
haven't got. The one I found looks at first glance like an Aero, Beacon
A2, Seal Brn, nicely faded, rust jersey, conmar zip all original
fittings, proper A2 styling, but the manner of manufacture is like Star
Sportswear, set in sleeve, etc. Got a gold rayon lining, makers labels
in neck name "Bond Style Manor" seperate label "Genuine Top Grain
Front Quarter Horsehide, I'm pretty sure ther is another somewhere will
look as soon as I have time. Might be wartime, I'd guess more likely
1950's, but hell, who knows??
Search on,my friend

OK Sky Pirate,
I have found two more "private label" Type "A2's" in our stockroom.
Neither is 100% accurate in detail, the nearest to a true A2 is made by
Daniel Boone, it has all the fittings, is very close in style but also
has side entry pockets and a quilt lining, but is 1940's, the other has
no label, sorry, has the right pockets, but is not a very nice jacket,
goatskin probably, maybe very thin horse, but I doubt it, maybe
1950's??. That's probably the lot, although there are some more
unopened (since 1988??)boxes that may contain jackets??????? I'l look
when I have time.
