I finally e-mailed our beloved deja.com to ask just WHAT THE HECK IS GOING
ON?! And actually got an answer - AVGFan

Greetings,

Thank you for contacting Deja.Com Customer Support.

We are conducting a process referred to as a split.
We split our new database and sent the older articles into the old
database. We do this to make the current database manageable
and to keep the query returns from this database quick.

*We do this every 2 weeks due to the enormous amount of incoming data that we
make searchable and archivable.

Unfortunately there was a failure in the procedure and so the split is
lasting longer than normal.

During this time, the following symptoms may occur:

-Forums not viewable in Thread digest format.

-No new posts in subscribed forums.

-Inability to mark all messages as read.

-The links to Post or Subscribe to a forum
are missing from all forums (subscribed and
unsubscribed).

-When you are reading a message in a forum
and you click on Forum, it gives you "Top Forums related to *"

-'Recnum parameter is missing' message, also viewed as "malformed thread
query"

The split should be finished July 7th and all messages will update at that
time.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Thank you,
Deja.com Customer Support

Seems as if they've been performing quite a few of these "splits" as of late!

Just a note that helps me - when we get this alignment of messages,
they start with the oldest messages first. I've found that if you go to
the bottom, under Search Discussions, and then hit the search button
with only the * in the input box, it makes the messages align with the
newest as the first page, not the oldest messages as the first page. It
makes it a lot easier to read the today's messages.

Hope that helps
John

The current state of the deja forums remind me of a very badly
translated Japanese game for the Nintendo. You played the commander of
a LA class attack sub and your engineer would always update you on the
situation of the boat, except with the bad "automated" translation from
Japanese to English he would occasionally say things like.

"All is doom!"

"Sighted Ahead Enemy"

and my favorite...

"target punished"

Welcome to the Deja forums, all is Doom!

******plus when they finally do get back to normal, all the posts from
the past 5 days (or however long it was) are marked as new since
there's no way to "mark all messages as old" when in the screwed
up/split/whatever mode. Oh well.

May I respectfully submit that we move this lashup to a different
service, like DELPHI? I find it easily the most cumbersome and annoying
forum I deal with. DELPHI at least posts 10 messages together...

Just my .02.

I'm all for it, this is ridiculous. I don't know much about the other
forums but there's got to be a better way.

I second the motion. This thing is acting up again. Can't read the
thread.

It's acting up again today, the main page keeps going back to
yesterday's and some of my posts so far are in space...and I've gotten
the now-classic "malformed query" notice a few times...sorry if I
double posted anywhere.
