Do any of you guys own a D-1 or B-6 and regularly wear it? What makes
and models are they? I would appreciate some info. I am thinking of
getting one or the other for a winter jacket. Since they are no small
investment$$$ I want to get the right one the first time. Thanks

Hey, Pirate, I own an Eastman B-6 and a McCoy's D-1, which I think most
of us who have been here a while know since I have gone into detail
about both jackets a few times (but I've been asked a few times!)and
that being the case, may I suggest looking through old threads or post
your email address in which case I'd be glad to blur you eyes with
answers to your questions. Both are excellent winter jackets!

Word to the wise, they are fairly warm jackets. Sky_Pirate, where do
you live round abouts? You might want to go with a Tanker/B-15/B-10 or
an A-2/M422a with a sweater if the weather gets only moderately cold
where you live. I'd only suggest a B-6 if the weather gets down below
20 degrees for more than 30 days a year. Otherwise the jacket will
just collect dust in your den.

I basically recommend anything sheepskin that is made by Eastman. I
returned one of their B-6 jackets, it was just to warm for my taste,
but the nicest sheepskin I've seen yet. However if you want to save a
few bucks, try Real McCoys NZ, but returns are a hastle and quality
control seems to be a problem.

Skypirate, this is a bit like asking which would be a better car to
drive on a sunday afternoon, a Ferrari or a Porsche? There are
differences to be sure, and perhaps a difference to their philosophies
as well, but in terms of wearing it, I doubt you'll notice them. I own
both a RM D-1 and an ELC B-6. Usually I find myself wearing the D-1.
There's just something I personally love about the hide on that jacket.
It's EXACTLY like the hide on an original pair of A-5 pants I own (by
the way Charles, where are those A-5s I sent you to repair?). Same
surface pattern, same color, and so on, but it's important to
understand that I'm compairing these jackets to just ONE original pair
of pants. Obviously that's a very personal decision on my part and I
don't expect anyone else to take it as gospel. The ELC B-6 is a
fantastic jacket, though the surface is far smoother than any of my
originals, but if I know Charles he has originals in his collection
that have surfaces exactly like the ELC version. Fault my limited
experence with originals. With the ELC they will make the jacket
EXACTLY to your specifications, so be sure that the measurements you
send them are CORRECT!! Otherwise you'll end up with a poorly fitting
jacket, and that's YOUR fault. RM is a bit more off the shelf, but they
tend to run a half size on the small size. If you're a size 41-42 order
a 42, but if you're a 42-43 order the 43. If in doubt order the next
size up with RM. You're probably going to wear something heavy under it
anyway.

Bearing in mind of course that the D-1 comes in small, medium, large
etc. sizings. I am a 42r and ended up with a large D-1...you can get a
more custom fit with a B-6.
Just a word about temperatures with respect to D-1's and B-6's...I have
been wearing an Eastman B-6 for quite a while now (the D-1 is
relatively new, though it did see quite a lot of wear last winter) and
find both to be very versatile temperature-wise and shouldn't be pushed
into a category of being useful only when it is below freezing temps. I
regularly wear a B-6/D-1 as soon as it drops into the mid-40's and keep
wearing them right through the winter. The beauty is in the range of
warmth; I usually wear a light shirt or LS T-shirt under these jackets
and am comfortable down into the freezing mark without adding layers. A
light sweater will add a good bit more warmth. I can't fit regular
sweaters under any of my jackets (don't want to-personal preference)
but if I could either jacket would then be extemely warm, though I
think comfort, especially ease of arm movement, would be sacrificed.

C'mon -- Chi ain't that bad(land). You been brainwashed by 'da Mayor!

If you grew up in the area, you may be used to the Chi-land weather, if not
you may want to consider a B-3.

On a somewhat side note: There are quite a few Jacketeers from the Chicago
area now. Maybe we oughtta get together at a convenient watering hole some
time? What d'ya think? The original Goose Island is pretty easy-on, easy-off
and they got FREE parking -- yes, in the middle of the city!

Well, you definitely have colder weather than here (SE PA) and jacket-
wise that's good...if I had could have only one, I'd pick the B-6 over
the D-1 simply because I think the B-6 has a bit of an edge with the bi-
swing back and waist adjusters helping make for a better fit and
comfort. That's just my opinion though....for sure either will get a
lot of use in your climate. Good luck.

Bit of a hike from McCormick Place, but still closer than me in the North
suburbs. It's on Clybourn about 2 (city) blocks north of North Ave. Almost
parallel to Lincoln Park - if you know the city, and about, what? 10 blocks
west? Where 'bouts is your office Ken?
http://www.gooseisland.com/clypub.html

On a good traffic day it may take me 30 minutes to get to the Goose. On a bad
traffic day, it takes 30 minutes to get to North Ave, then 30 minutes from the
expressway down North to Clybourn!

Know all three areas quite well. I used to have a friend that lived on
Southport. Do you ever get to Resi's up on Irving Park? Or N&N Barbecue?
Resi's is a great German tavern with a wonderful little biergarten hidden in
back.

Wasn't the late Chicago Brewing on Cortland? Right in the shadow of the
expressway?

Off 22 between 41 and 94? Pretty swanky digs you got there...is Ditka a
neighbor? I work in North Chicago (no, not Great Lakes) right up the road. We
probably swear at each other in traffic jams on the weekends! ;)

Chime in you Chicagoland Jacketeers - we're gonna have a smoker some time!

I don't have the address here, (I'm home now), but I believe he has

The more the merrier, I say. I was actually thinking that Autumn may
be a better time for Jacketeers to show off their possessions, but Chicago
has been experiencing some rather pleasant, jacket type weather as of
late. What do you think Ken? Flatlanders' is in your neck o' the woods
too.

BTW, I've had a Cuban Punch before, didn't find it any better or worse
than the Honduran or Ecuadorian–wherever they are now.

The buckles themselves are dull nickel on brass, I think, but you can
get the actual straps finished in either russet or seal along with the
other trim items which look pretty spiffy in contrast to the seal color
of the torso parts. Naturally, that's just my opinion. I forgot before
to mention that the B-6 has 2-way adjusters on the cuffs while the D-1
doesn't though I found myself leaving the cuffs on the "outside", or
looser, position most of the time anyway. Let me know what you get!

300!? Yikes! Sounds like you have a pretty ritzy humidor too! Sounds like the
makings of a meeting here. Check Sky_Pirate too, sounds like he's in. Maybe
Ken Calder's associate can get ahold of an Aero A-2 for us to evaluate. And
again, all you Chi Jacketeers: sound off!

I've been making all of the meeting place suggestions, got any favorites you'd
like to propose?

Being a Raymond Chandler fan myself, I'm kicking my own butt for not
picking up on your "style" there.

See the latest thread within this thread between Kenal0 and me. Are you any-
where near the North suburbs? Or is the citi a better local? Couple'a beers
and a cigar could be a good start for bigger and better gatherings!

Ooooh - Beinlich's - I LOVE their chili! Not familiar with Rosebud - lean
toward Mia Franchesca in Northbrook.

Hey Ken, as deja is going haywire yet again, I'm gonna switch this
conversation over to the MyDeja e-mail. Have you used it? It works pretty
good. I'll send a cc to Skypirate as well.

How does it work or where can I find info? Rosebud is off of Taylor in
Little Italy in the city. Mia Francesca is also aoutstanding but you

When you sign on as a deja.com member, you get the e-mail automatically. It's
under the header at the top titled: My Deja. Click the link and follow the
leads. When you get to the My Deja page, the e-mail link is in the left
frame. You probably have a ton of e-mail you haven't read!

Yeah, I found out about Rosebud, I probably went right past it on the way to
Franchesca's on Taylor. The trick with Fran's in Northbrook is to call ahead,
have 'em put your name on the list, and by the time you get there - they're
callin' your name!

Check yer e-mail!

Perhaps you would prefer if we dropped the original 1931 spec. Silk
lining in favour of a cotton lining, my restoration machinist thinks
that,s a great idea, it would provide her with an additional source of
income, relining A2 jackets!!!

Okay, 2 to the north, 2 to the south -- we'll keep you posted!

The Oshkosh fly-in is always so crowded if you don't get reservations in
a couple years in advance you're SOL, at least for a room, or even a camping
spot. I've never much enjoyed sleeping in my car! Some year I may try to make
it up and back in a day...but that's a pretty grueling trip.

BTW - isn't the Chicago spelling "youse" ? ;)

Ken, would you consider offering a cotton lining as an option on your A2, for

what we can squeeze in.

We do have a few yards of the Aero Beacon colour cotton left over from
the mid 1980's, although I can't for the life of me understand why you
would want us to use that instead of silk???? If it's just the colour,
have NO doubt, it IS original to the A2 its dyed from a remnant of an
original piece of lining, we have just ordered a re-run, if I had ANY
doubt whatsoever, we would have changed it, obviously, even though we
are thinking of running a second colour, more golden, however only the
forun folk have EVER questioned the rust shade, I do admit it does look
much more rusty in real life than in any photo I've seen (which tends
to redden the colour), and at £14 per yard, and 1000 yard mimimum run,
I think a few more folk are going to have to ask before we do another
shade!!!
The silk and cotton feel identical to the touch, as they did
originally, hence all the bullsh*t that has been floating around before
Marc W's evaluation, OK the cotton lining will save you £15 now, but in
the long term the A2 will probably need two relines before the silk
lining will even begin to break up. BUT, our policy is "The customer is
always right,"if you want cotton, you can have cotton, We will make the
jacket of YOUR dreams, not ours, but please contact me by email,
aero.l...@virgin.net I don't like the idea of selling on the forum.
