The Herndon High School Student Services department will work collaboratively with teachers, families, students, and community members to ensure that all students have equal access to quality instruction. Because all students are capable of success, we will create equity by working with stakeholders to fulfill the academic, career and personal/social needs of our diverse student body, maintain high expectations and accountability, promote ethical values, and prepare students to become productive citizens.

In 2015, Herndon High School Student Services program met the criteria to become a Recognized ASCA Model Program by the American School Counselor Association. The Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) designation is awarded to schools that align with the criteria set by the ACSA national model. A RAMP designated school counseling program must demonstrate a comprehensive, data-driven program that meets the needs of all students, and the designation is held for five years. Herndon is one of only 550 schools in the entire United States (out of 37,000 high schools) that has achieved this recognition!

Over 100 students, educators, and parents rallied outside the Board of Education meeting on Thursday demanding the school district do more to support difficult classroom conversations about the rights of Palestinian people.

On August 31, 2022, the school resource officer at Hillsborough High School, located at 5000 Central Avenue in Tampa, was notified by an anonymous student that another student was in possession of a firearm on campus.

The SRO immediately attempted to locate the student, who was not in her designated class. The SRO and school staff were able to locate the female student during dismissal near the bus ramp. She was escorted to the gymnasium where her backpack was searched. The student was found to be in possession of a loaded 9mm firearm wrapped in a t-shirt inside her bag. Jayleen Hernandez, 15, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property (felony) and minor in possession of a firearm (misdemeanor). The investigation into this incident, including how Hernandez was able to gain access to a gun and her motive for bringing the weapon on campus, is ongoing.

"There is no greater priority for our officers than student safety, and we are thankful that our SRO took the information shared with him seriously, taking action to find this student and secure a weapon that could have been used to cause serious harm to others," said Chief Mary O'Connor. "Just one month into the new school year, I cannot stress enough that it is critical for students, teachers and staff to speak up when they are made aware of a threat such as this. See Something, Say Something. In this case, it could have saved lives."

Can you imagine trying to learn in a classroom overstuffed with forty restless students and just one teacher there to wrangle them all? Unfortunately, this is the reality for many students in public schools struggling with high student-to-teacher ratios.

A student-to-teacher ratio describes the number of students per teacher in a school. For example, a school with 5,000 students and 200 teachers has a 25:1 student-to-teacher ratio. In other words, for each teacher, there are 25 students.

Lower student-to-teacher ratios, on the other hand, are better for student achievement. A 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio, for example, is on the low end. To achieve this ratio with the same 5,000 students, you would need 500 teachers. This may seem like a high number of teachers, but it means students get personalized attention.

When fewer students are in a class, teachers can give individual students the help they need to succeed. Sometimes, schools allocate teachers so that students with a higher need for personalized attention are in classrooms with lower ratios. For example, special education classrooms may have smaller class sizes to lower the student-to-teacher ratio.
