Hi all, I have an issue with using the move tool. Every time I try to use it, it just creates a 'select' marquee (see picture below). I thought it was a tablet issue but it's also doing it with just using my trackpad or other mouse.

Hi Ged, thanks for the reply! So it looks like you're right as I can zoom right in and the move tool works okay when I make sure the first pixel I click on is on content. However, this is different to how it would work before - the move tool used to let me move a layer even when I clicked on an 'alpha' pixel? Could this be a toggled setting or something I may have accidentally clicked? At least it's not an intrinsic bug or something!

I have tried CC19 and CC20, auto-select on or off, resetting tools/presets/preferences, unchecking graphics processor in preformance preferences as I saw suggested elsewhere, different PSD files, resetting computer multiple times, changing Wacom preferences (although this issue is not unique to using tablet), everything I can think of.

I had the same issue with the marquee coming up instead of the layer moving, but switching off auto-select in the move tool options dialog did the trick for me. And like Dave said, switching back to Legacy Free Transform....I did both, not sure if they influence each other.

This same error started happening to me today. I've updated the app, I keep restarting the program and it works for a few moves and then stops and gives me the program error message. This never happened with CS6!

When this has happened to me, it's been a text layer. To fix, I select the text tool, click in the text to activate the edit bounding box. Then click enter (no changes) and select the move tool and it should now be able to be moved.

The problem I have occurs one day and then not the next...it's just weird as I just never know as and when it will happen so it is affecting my workflow and stressing me out! But it is happening a LOT ...and with the phoneline and adobe online chat currently closed I thought I'd see if anyone else is experiencing this same issue with Photoshop cc 2019?

Basically, I will be working and all of a sudden my tools just stop functioning and the cursor just displays the move tool arrow..I cannot do anything after that.. I want to switch tools to say lasso or brush and I can't! So I am just stuck, so have to save everything and shut down and start up again..only for it to happen again shortly after..an so on!! It really is so frustrating and time wasting.

When this happens it seems to affect my OS too ( high sierra) as I am unable to launch any app from the bar.. when I click on an app to open it , it doesn't but instead a pop up menu appears for me to choose the app from my app folder. It also behaves strangely in other ways and just doesn't feel right like it might be a bug, however I can't see anyone on here with the same issues so far when searching.

Last week I contacted adobe online support who advised me but the same issue has come back and I have just had to muddle through due to work deadlines. I do aim to call them again on Monday but for now wanted to reach out for advise? I am a freelance illustrator and have deadlines looming so this is quite stressful! Any help or advice would be most appreciated, thank you.

Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate it! Unfortunately I already reset the preferences to fix this via adobe support but this was a very short term fix and my issues soon returned I considered updating to Mojave but I am concerned this could cause even more issues after reading up on it!

Experiencing same bugs with Wacom, tried all resets, reboots and restarts and still happens continuosly. Something wrong with connecting Wacom Intuos PTH-451 to new OS since Mojave, I'm now on Catalina 10.15.2

Hello. I'm also experiencing a similar problem. I don't know if it can be fixed. Okay, it all went good, fine. But i don't know how or when, but my brush tool, everything, had the move tool only; the hand tool is insted the zoom tool. Plus, when selecting a layer, it selects another layer at the same time, asi if im Command or Control clicking; I made sure my Wacom tablet didn't had any key stuck. It is only fine when using my mouse, but turns back to the issue as soon as my pen is near my wacom tablet touch screen. And it even is working strange when going to other windows of my browsers. Fix this please. Is it my Wacom tablet that's wrong, or something else? My photoshop is CC 2019, version 20.0.9. I have an important project, and I don't want this issue to ruin it. Help me. I even tried reseting the preferences in Photoshop, but all remains the same. Please, help me.

While a stuck spacebar could cause the issue certainly, the bug is definitely related to Wacom+PS+macOS. You can install nothing other than fresh Mojave, wacom drivers, and PS CC and this will happen.

Simple trick is to turn off your "Device" bluetooth, and then turn it back on. I don't know how nor why it worked, but It worked for a few of us with the same issue. Might work for you aswell, might not. Nonetheless, if it works for you, it doesn't guarantee that the same issue won't repeat it self (in my cases it still does). When it does repeat it self, try the "Bluetooth - Off/On" trick again.

For some reason, the move tool in photoshop is not working at all. Every time I try to move the black rectangle with the Move tool (V), it will not "drag" it anywhere around the document. Unselecting "Auto-Select" will not fix this issue. I have already reseted my prefences by clicking ctrl+alt+shift when I opened Photoshop.

EDIT:

Oddly enough, after about an hour or so and restarting Photoshop and my laptop once or twice, the Move tool seems to be working now. I have no idea what I did to remedy that, because after the first time I reset the prefences, restarted photoshop and laptop, I still had the same issue. But after the second time, it seems to be doing okay.

I'm sorry I cannot provide an answer to this, but I just wanted to give you an update.

When I hit ctrl+T, I am able to move it around yes, but I would prefer to use the Move tool if possible.

You are right about the layer icon being unsuaul. Do you know how to fix that? That may be causing the issue.

Alas there's a lot of issues/bugs with version 21.1, I only use it on my work PC occasionally for testing issues reported on the forum. I reverted back to 21.0.3 on my home PC where I use Photoshop a lot more, you can do this via the CC app

I am having the same problem with Adobe Photoshop move tool. I tried to go back one update, and even with the previous update the problem still occures. You can't drag with the move toos or duplicate using alt key and drag. Very frustarting

(cursing removed) Adobe?? Every single update introduces a new glitch. I can only move using arrow keys! This is insane. They are taking basic functions that have been as is for decades and messing them up. I mean they know we are professionals, right? I do this for my job not for fun. I am seriously searching for new software....

When I have the issue you're having, it's because I bumped a key. Either something gets selected from W or I hit the Q shortcut and I'm in quick mask mode (but the layer doesn't highlight showing this). I either somehow selected a pixel somewhere or I got stuck in quickmask (but the layer may not have highlighted reflecting this).

In my case, I continually hit Q to free transform or deselect or something. I could have sworn Q used to be something else other than Quick Mask (Q) but I think I've just been using Flash and Animate for too many years now, that I hit Q to free transform.

Something has changed. I always paste an image on a layer then select the layer and use the Move Tool to move it around until it is placed where I want it. Now I paste the image, select the layer, choose the Move Tool and the layer selection jumps to another layer and that one gets moved.

Take a look in the top tool bar for a check box. If this is enable you can select a layer by clicking on it from the canvas, if not checked, then you need to select the layer in the layers panel or use the modifier key to select it on the canvas.

In previous versions, that statement would have been correct. I'm only now realizing that Auto-Select is now on as a default in CC 2017. And when you reset your Tools (which I do all the time), it turns back on again.

Yes, Adobe needs to give their UX team a long, hard look if that team really thought it was okay to implement a new behavior that behaves radically differently from what people expect, and make it the default so suddenly all the wrong things start getting moved around when people are attempting to move layers with large transparent areas.

Halfway through my work, it just activates the 'Auto Select', even though I've been working with that layer for a while. Or it will change a duplicated layer to 'Pass Through' and keep it in that mode, even though I'm not working, nor ever have, in that mode in addition to picking some random layer to move.

I've been working in PS for nearly 30 years and with this and other nerw head-scratching changes it's like starting all over again. Things take 2 - 3 times longer now. Not a good thing when you're a production artist trying to meet deadlines!

I'm recovering from Re-set Preferences and among the many things I will tackle one at a time, like this one... On a layer where I have placed at graphic, I used to be able to immediately move that item using the move tool, but now it's stuck unless I choose 'Transform' which places a box around the item and then I can move it with the move tool.

I am suddenly having the exact same issue...none of these comments above are helping. @erik24746247ndtm did you figure this out? I use shortkeys all the time and find myself hitting something in a hurry and getting myself in a pickle...but this one i cannot figure out whats going on.
