When you install Windows 11/10 on your PC, you can use a product key or digital license to easily activate Windows 10/11 OS. You can also choose not to activate Windows 10/11 when installing it. It is legal to use Windows OS without activation.

Without activating Windows, you may have some limitations when using Windows and lost access to the premium features of the Windows operating system. Below we list some disadvantages of not activating Windows 10/11.

A: KMS (Key Management Service) is one of the legal methods to activate Microsoft Windows OS and Microsoft Office. KMS is usually used by volume license customers like medium or large businesses, schools, or non-profits agents. KMS clients have to activate their devices at least once half a year.

You can also check your Windows product key with CMD by typing the following command in Command Prompt: wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey. Press Enter to execute the command.

A: If you want to transfer your license to another computer, you need to first deactivate Windows 10/11 by uninstalling the product key. However, only in some circumstances, you can transfer your license to a new computer.

MiniTool Power Data Recovery, a professional data recovery program for Windows, helps you recover any deleted or lost files. You can use it to recover any deleted or lost data from Windows PC or laptop, external hard drive, USB flash drive, SD/memory card, SSD, etc.

MiniTool ShadowMaker is a top free PC backup software program. It lets you freely select files and folders to back up to another place. It also lets you select preferred partitions on your PC to back up. You can even select the whole disk content to back up. As for the backup device, you can use an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or network driver to store your backups.

You can use MiniTool Partition Wizard to easily create a new partition, delete a partition, split a partition, merge two partitions, extend/resize a partition, format a partition, wipe a partition/disk, etc. It also provides many other disk management features, e.g. migrate OS to SSD/HD, check and fix disk errors, analyze hard drive space, test hard drive speed, and more. It fulfills all your disk management demands.

This post introduces the disadvantages of not activating Windows 11/10. Some common FAQs about Windows activation are also listed. It also offers guides for how to activate Windows 11/10 and provides some useful computer tools to help you keep your data safe and manage hard disks.

I saw a previous post How to activate the free Windows 10 upgrade without actually using it? but my question is a little different. I have upgraded Windows 10 on several PCs and subsequently reinstalling them clean with Windows 10. So I am sure I can replace the HDD, reinstall Windows 7 using my original Windows 7 key and activate Windows 10.

But that is half day worth of work. I wonder if there is an easier way to activate my PC with Windows 10 without actually installing Windows 10 on it, not even on a separate HDD. I also don't want to mess up my PC by allowing Windows 10 to upgrade in-place and then downgrade back to Windows 7.

source command is officially for Unix operating systems family and you can't use it on windows basically. instead, you can use venv\Scripts\activate command to activate your virtual environment.

For windows, type "C:\Users\Sid\venv\FirstProject\Scripts\activate" in the terminal without quotes. Simply give the location of your Scripts folder in your project. So, the command will be location_of_the_Scripts_Folder\activate.

A small reminder, but I had my slashes the wrong way on Win10 cmd. According to python documentation the activate command is: C:\> \Scripts\activate.batWhen you're browsing directories it's e.g. cd .env/Scripts

If you see the 5 folders (Include,Lib,Scripts,tcl,pip-selfcheck) after using the virtualenv yourenvname command, change directory to Scripts folder in the cmd itself and simply use "activate" command.

I am deploying Windows 10 Pro to some computers on our domain. I have tested on one workstation and the only way i was able to activate it was to unjoin the domain, activate it via Microsoft, then rejoin the domain. Is there anyway i can activate Windows without unjoining the domain or using a server with Key Management Service?

The KEY thing is - the media and Windows activation key must match or activation will fail. Meaning if you used a VL Windows 10 Pro .iso - you need to use a VLK to activate. If you used OEM media to install Windows, only an OEM key will activate that install.

The problem is you are using Volume Licensing media which has a KMS key built-in which you have to manually change to your VL MAK key. The proper way to do this is to create your image with VL media, manually enter the MAK key, sysprep and make your image. Assuming the workstation you are applying the image to is licensed properly for the version of Windows you are installing.

Hi Don,

Activating Windows on the reference VM has no bearing on whether it will activate on the target PC. The Sysprep\Generalize process which runs on every image at deployment time strips out any existing license info from the image. SmartDeploy provides two opportunities to enter a Windows product key - either in Capture Wizard (in which case it is hashed and written into the metadata of the image to be used at deployment time), or in Deploy Wizard (in which case it is written into the Sysprep Unattend.xml to be used at deployment time). If you do not provide a Windows product key at one of these times, then we cannot guarantee that the target device will activate.

If you have any questions, feel free to email us at support (at) smartdeploy.com

Hi Don,

OEM licenses do not include reimaging rights from Microsoft. We have had some customers report success with such licenses, but it is inconsistent and unreliable (by design), as the license is only intended to be used to revert the device back to its original factory image. SmartDeploy has no interaction with this process, so we have no control over whether or not Microsoft allows the device to activate if you do not provide a license key for us to pass through at deployment time. Our recommendation is to look into getting a volume license. We are not a volume license reseller, but we can put you in touch with one - go ahead and email us and we can send you their info.

Regards,

Glenn

As Support mentioned, volume licensing is the correct way to go about this. But we've had luck pulling the OEM key from BIOS using something like ShowKeyPlus, then activating with that key. There are ways to automate this with a PS script.

I ran into this issue as well. If you have a digital license key which you most likely do then you need to get an ISO for windows 10 and reinstall the OS, this will reactivate windows. Fully complete the initial "out-of-box" set up while connected to the internet (so it can connect to the Microsoft servers and activate the digital license). When you get to the desktop for the first time is when your digital key will be activated, you don't need to worry about preforming all of the windows updates before you image. From there you can go ahead and image it. I would recommend setting your answer file to shutdown rather than restart after the image is complete. Make sure when you power the PC back on it is connected to the internet via ethernet cable or the digital key will not activate.

I have deployed 50 OEM Windows 10 machines without a VL. What I noticed is that a few machines were activated immediately, whereas others had to be online for anywhere from 24-72 hours before they would activate. But everyone of them did eventually activate with the OEM license.

My apologies, I have been on other projects and never returned to this topic. I know this is a very late reply, but the answer is no. I did not put the product key in the deploy wizard. That said, I have had the best success when the newly imaged computer is started for the first time with an active LAN connection (ethernet) rather than WiFi. My total deployments now are around 64, including re-imaging a few machines after employee turnover. I still have not had a single one fail to activate.

Microsoft allows anyone to download Windows 10 for free and install it without a product key. It'll keep working for the foreseeable future, with only a few small cosmetic restrictions. And you can even pay to upgrade to a licensed copy of Windows 10 after you install it.

If you aren't on Windows, you can visit the Windows 10 ISO download page to download an ISO directly (say, if you're installing Windows 10 in Boot Camp on a Mac). If you visit that page on a Windows machine, it'll redirect you to the download tool page instead.

If you don't see this option, you can also provide a KMS client setup key to continue. These keys won't give you an activated copy of Windows unless you're in an organization with a Key Management Service, but they will allow you to get through the Windows installation process.

When you select this option, you'll be able to install either "Windows 10 Home" or "Windows 10 Pro." Bear in mind that, if you plan to pay to upgrade to the paid version later, it'll be cheaper to upgrade to Windows 10 Home, so you may want to install the Home version. Whatever version you choose, Windows 10 will install normally.
