I could not tell what this meant. Was it backing itself up, rather than the USB drive I had plugged in, in hopes that it would back up that USB drive? Or was it perhaps overwriting that USB drive? I hoped not. After several minutes, it had only proceeded as far as the 0% mark, so evidently it was going to take a while before I would know its intentions. Instead, I clicked Close and surveyed the damage. My other USB drive still booted OK, so it appeared that PB builder was designed to back up only the system that it was installed on.

So I repeated the process, this time choosing Save. That put a copy of pinguybuilder-menu-based_5.2-1_all.deb into my Downloads folder. MakeTechEasier (Orosz, 2015) suggested sudo apt-get install gdebi. That gave me an additional option: right-click on the downloaded .deb > Open with other application (other, that is, than the Software Install default option that had just failed) > GDebi Package Installer.
