A crosstab chart in Tableau is also called a Text table, which shows the data in textual form. The chart is made up of one or more dimensions and one or more measures. This chart can also show various calculations on the values of the measure field such as running total, percentage total, etc.

You can get the values color encoded in the crosstab chart by dropping the measure field into the Color shelf as shown in the following screenshot. This color coding shows the strength of the color depending on the value of the measure. The larger values have a darker shade than the lighter values.

One drawback with my Placeholder crosstab above is that you lose the column headers. Fortunately, the same placeholder hack can be used to create the headers themselves. This unlocks some interesting possibilities. For example, you can color some of the headers but not others if want the end user to focus on certain fields. Or you could color the headers based on period-over-period performance.

1. Fixed Rows & Columns: By default, we have Six rows and columns in tableau. You can increase the number of rows and columns to a maximum of 16 by following the below-mentioned steps.

Crosstab /Text Table because of its high resemblance with the Pivot table of excel is also known as Pivot tables. Crosstab being one of the most basic and popularly used forms of the chart in tableau. Adding the color and calculation can enhance the storytelling experience with your data.

This is a guide to CrossTab in Tableau. Here we discuss the problem statement, where to use and the formation of crosstab with its limitation. You may also look at the following articles to learn more-

However, similar conditional formatting can still be achieved in Tableau. Different than excel, conditional formatting in Tableau cannot be applied across a column but rather across a mark. Marks are generated when measures are added to the rows/columns shelf. Adding these additional marks allows a user to achieve a similar result to excel-like conditionally formatted crosstabs.

First, create a view with the proper field listing row values. Next, instead of adding measures to the columns shelf, add number of records fields instead and set the aggregation to min so all the bars=1. If you plan to ultimately construct a crosstab with 2 measures then add 2 number of records fields.

Check View Permissions: Ensure that the account you are using to access Tableau has sufficient permissions to download the views you are targeting. Confirm that the account can access the views and export them as crosstabs manually in the Tableau interface.

Below we have a crosstab, where it shows sales by the region and sub-category. The attendees wanted to know if you could highlight a specific region as an end user may be interested in that particular area.

Formatting options do not allow you to choose a specific column or row in the crosstab, so we would use a calculation in this case. As we would like to colour the Region dimension, we should specify the dimension within the calculation. My below calculation assigns a value of 1 whenever the region is South; any other region would have a 0 assigned:

I've done this by unchecking the option 'Show Header'. I have published my workbook on tableau server. I want to download the sheet as cross tab (i.e in csv format). When I am trying to do so it is giving me all fields including 'Sales' field in csv file. I don't want to show the 'Sales' field in csv.

How can I achieve this?

This second method is a much faster way to export crosstab data to Excel. However, numbers are converted to text fields so these will need to be converted back to numeric values before further analysis can be undertaken in Excel.

When you export data or a crosstab from Tableau to Excel, only the filtered data within the visual is exported (i.e. only the data included in the Columns, Rows and Colors shelves will be included in the data or crosstab). Any filters on the filters shelf will need to be added to the Tooltips on the Marks Card for the information relevant to the filter to be visible in the data or crosstab.

Crosstabs charts are beneficial when undergoing comparative analysis and are an easy way to showcase key insights to end-users within a Tableau dashboard ( A Primer on Tables ). But users want a way to export these crosstabs into a fixed report, displaying data in a consistent way that makes their final deliverables (Excel File or CSV File) high quality, pixel perfect, and print-ready to be presented to management and utilized for key decision making (Howson, 2007). Achieving this however requires, Tableau users to:

While this kind of business speed can be leveraged by adopting Tableau, it is just as important for this efficiency to be incorporated when generating and distributing fixed formatted reports. A lot of time and resources is often expelled when shaping Tableau crosstabs to fit into documents such as Microsoft Excel, CSV File, PowerPoint, Word, or PDF File.

The export alternatives are a CSV file, an Extract (.hyper) file, or a Tableau Data Source (.tds) file. These may then be used to connect directly to Tableau or share the data for others to use. The choices are either to export/copy to .CSV or create a crosstab in Excel if you only want the data for one view or sheet.

Highlight tables are one of the simplest chart types to create, but are also among the most powerful. When compared to a crosstab (a.k.a. text table) view, this basic data visualization helps reduce the time to insight and improve the accuracy of insights.

While more helpful than a raw table of numbers, the view we have created so far can still be improved. The numbers themselves are encoded by color, which helps us recognize highs and lows in the data more quickly than we could with a crosstab, but there is a lot of white space around each number.

You can export directly to Excel the data needed to generate the view formatted as a crosstab. When you migrate your view as a crosstab, Tableau automatically opens up the Excel application and pastes a crosstab version of the current view into a new Excel workbook.

Exporting as a crosstab allows you to export summarized data from both tabular charts and visual graphs / maps into a CSV file. Keep in mind that downloaded data may not stay in a print-friendly format.

If the Crosstab option is greyed out, the workbook may not allow the download of crosstab data. To discuss your options, you may contact the visualization developer listed at the bottom of the dashboard.

The crosstab chart takes one or more dimensions and one or more measures. This chart can also show different calculations on the values of the measures field such as percentage total, running total, etc.

For example , consider a data source such as Sample-Superstore , if you want to find the number of Sale for each Segment in each Region . To display the data for each year using the available Order Dates below are some steps to create a crosstab chart.

Hi, I exactly have the same question. Copying any table from Power BI dashboard and paste into excel as crosstab is very crucial function for us, and makes our life easier. (It is possible in Tableau). When is it going to be released and be possible in Power BI? Many thanks.

For example, consider a data source such as Sample-Superstore, if you want to find the number of Sale for each Segment in each Region. To display the data for each year using the available Order Dates below are some steps to create a crosstab chart.

In the past i had to export as crosstab csv and then use CSV import extension to update records in Airtable. Now i want to just use a directly synced table from the Tableau integration, but it is not working.
