EDUCATION FOR DEMOCRACY CONFERENCE
The Education for Democracy Conference brings together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members to strengthen the movement for democracy in all of education, from kindergarten through higher education. As the attack on public education continues to escalate, with hundreds of schools closed, thousands of teachers laid off, scores of student and labor unions shut down, and higher education evermore inaccessible and unaccountable, the need is immediate for an effective national coordinated movement to overcome corporatization and to fight for the democratic alternative.
The 2013 Education for Democracy Conference will focus on this critical moment and work to develop actions for the coming year. It will also educate about the long term underlying problems in education today. And it will raise up examples of successful reforms and organizing at all levels of education. The conference will feature case studies, plenary panels, roundtable discussions, and skill-shares about:
- Understanding the corporatization and privatization of education
- Resistance to public school closings
- Internationalism in the student and teacher movements
- Student debt emancipation and tuition abolition
- Community participation and control in education
- Academic freedom, the right to organize, and free speech in schools
- Building a movement for democracy in education in 2013-14
2013 DEMOCRACY CONVENTION
If you want to strengthen democracy where it matters most ... in our communities, our schools, our workplaces and local economies, our military, our government, our media, our constitution ... you will find something inspiring in Madison this August. Join us at the second national Democracy Convention.
More than one conference, the Democracy Convention houses at least nine conferences under one roof. As the great progressive reformer Fighting Bob La Follette said, "democracy is a life," and "involves constant struggle" in all sectors of society. With the Democracy Convention, we recognize the importance of each of these separate democracy struggles, as well as the need to unite them all in a common, deeply rooted, broad based, movement for democracy.
Every day we learn of new participants in the convention, new conference conveners, new sponsors, and new, incredible speakers and workshop leaders. This will be THE PLACE to go this summer for those committed to winning democracy in the U.S.A.. So:
Thank you, and see you in Madison!
