Dear friends, colleagues, and students of Deepak,

As many of you know, Deepak Kapur passed away last Saturday 4/11 in Albuquerque.  He touched the lives of so many people all over the world, and we want to make sure everyone has a place to come together to remember him.

So I've created a Google Group https://groups.google.com/g/deepak-kapur-memorial so we can
(i) share memories and stories about Deepak,
(ii) post condolences and messages to Roli and Ila, and
(iii) discuss ways to honor his legacy.

and also a shared Google Photos album where we can upload photos of Deepak (e.g., from conferences or personal moments)

We are also exploring ideas for more lasting tributes, such as a memorial workshop or a special collection of essays in his honor. If you have thoughts, please share them on the group.

Please share this message, the Google Group, and the photo album widely with anyone who knew Deepak. The more voices and memories we gather, the richer this tribute will be.

Thanks,

Vu (Deepak's PhD student 2013) and Roli

Thank you very much, Roli and Vu, for this initiative.
Deepak truly deserves to be honored and remembered in a meaningful way.

I fully agree that organizing a memorial workshop and a special collection of essays in his honor are excellent ideas.
The workshop could bring together colleagues, collaborators, and former students. It could include a dedicated tribute session, where participants share personal memories and reflections, together with technical talks presenting work related to Deepak’s areas of research. It could also be co-located with a relevant conference (ICLP, IJCAR?).

In addition, a corresponding volume could be prepared (for example, a Festschrift-style proceedings or special issue), with an introductory section of tributes followed by a collection of technical contributions inspired by his work. The volume could also include contributions not necessarily presented at the workshop.

This kind of structure could help reflect both the personal and scientific impact Deepak had on the community, while keeping a clear separation between the two.
I would be very interested to hear your thoughts.

I have also uploaded a couple of photos of Deepak that I took during our visit to Aranjuez, Spain, in June 2014.

Warm regards,
Pedro
