I had issues importing the VA directly (mine was on ESXi 5 - but I'm
hoping my suggestion helps).
I solved my issue by downloading the zipped copy and un-zipping
locally. I then imported the VA from my locally unpacked copy.
Installation went without issues.
Hope this helps.

Once the appliance has started, it doesn't appear a web server is
running.

The appliance did get a DHCP address and I followed the instructions
to change this to a static address. The new static address is shown at
the login prompt. All my vms are using the Vmware Bridged network and
I can ping from the appliance to all my machines and back again,
including from the host. I've also turned off all firewalls and A/V on
the host.
I don't see any errors during boot up of the appliance, mind you its
very fast.
I ran a netstat from the appliance and I can't see anything listening
on port 80 or 443. Is this correct?

I edited the /etc/hosts file and added an entry for the appliance, so
mine looks like:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 sdfsnas
192.168.0.100 sdfsnas1

Thanks for your help!

Nice job. You look like you solved the issue by your self. 8^)
For info though, you could of course add a static entry to your local
DNS server (or router if you don't have a local DNS server), or access
the sdfsnas1 pages by IP. This will get over the issue if another PC
on your network needs access. It can be a pain to have to edit the
Host file on each PC.
Good luck with the rest of your trial.
